Ad Transparency and Access for Researchers: What are platforms hiding?

This session will bring together researchers, policy advocates, journalists, activists and others interested in discussing how online advertisements can be made more transparent. We'll surface specific problem areas within existing ad transparency efforts and identify what is required to support scrutiny and oversight into online advertisements.

How will you deal with varying numbers of participants in your session?:

Opening remarks from Laura Edelson and Jason Chuang about the state of access to information about online advertisements on digital platforms. This will be followed by a brief policy overview from Owen Bennett and Ferras Vinh about proposed solutions to this gap. From there, we’ll enter into moderated Q&A/discussion with the audience for other thoughts on how to secure advertising transparency, barriers to access, advocacy strategies, etc. Jason and Laura will also seek feedback on technical standards that they are developing for universal ad transparency.

We're hoping that many efforts and discussions will continue after Mozfest. Share any ideas you already have for how to continue the work from your session.:

Ideally this session will help bridge the gap between research and advocacy so that policy advocates can better understand what researchers need, help fight for that access, and in turn learn from what researchers discover to promote better policy all around.

It's possible a specific action will come out of the conversation that people can then collaborate on, but if not, we will facilitate connection so that the next time there's a related issue, that collaboration can be smoother.

What is the goal and/or outcome of your session?:

Bring together researchers, policy advocates, journalists, activists and others interested in discussing how online advertisements can be made more transparent. Surface specific problem areas within existing ad transparency efforts and identify what is required to support scrutiny and oversight into online advertisements. Make a game plan for how we can advocate to platforms to provide this access.
