Supplying goods in a decentralised world

In the age of Amazon and Alibaba it seems that our whole globe can have anything delivered within hours thanks to a small handful of incredibly powerful companies. In this session we seek to understand why and what the OSS community is doing in response.

We invite everyone working in logistics and distribution solutions within the OSS community, or folks running distribution processes thanks to OSS code, to join us to discuss, share experiences and dream about how we might combine our efforts even more effectively to provide genuine, sustainable solutions to one of the most impactful parts of our economy.

Come and join us for this 60min discussion where we will explore what it means to create dynamic supply chains in a decentralized world.

We're hoping that many efforts and discussions will continue after Mozfest. Share any ideas you already have for how to continue the work from your session.:

I really hope that we can build a working group to take things forward and explore how open standards can help create decentralised supply without monopolistic control. It depends on who turns up to the session and how motivated people are or how much direct impact they feel doing such work will have for them. I also really hope that the session can engage people from around the world to work collectively on this problem.

How will you deal with varying numbers of participants in your session?:

If 30 participants attend we'll split into breakout groups for discussions.
If 3 attend we will not.
If 3 people attend we will just have a discussion about the topic and share ideas about what we've already found and know about.
I've facilitated dozens of sessions at gatherings around the world so I feel pretty confident about managing this potential.

What is the goal and/or outcome of your session?:

We hope to gather folks that are working in OSS solutions or applications for supply good to talk about experiences, challenges and hopefully build ideas going forward.
I have a vision for an open standards for supplying goods that would allow us to mutualise more freely, but I am quite new to this space so as much as anything I want to gather experiences and knowledges about what is out there so we can build a small group motivated to share and work on these problems.
