Mozilla Festival 2021 (March 8th – 19th, 2021)

The Post Digital Audio Quilt: A Pop Up, Speculative & Inclusive Audio Fiction Experiment exploring AI Wellness

Participants will hear the start of a story exploring wellbeing including an AI character in a post-digital lockdown future setting. They will be invited to create and record the next part of the story using prompts and frames including themes of shared joy and healing using an online form. Digital storytelling has been argued to be a positive way to engage a diverse range of voices “capturing lives, creating community” (Lambert & Hessler, 2018). The collaborative audio fiction experiment will act as a platform to bring together diverse co-constructed community knowledge and shared experience of wellbeing exploring how AI can be used to support wellness outcomes during the lockdown and beyond, in both an innovative and inclusive capacity - “In the world of media convergence, every important story gets told” (Jenkins, 2006: p3).

How will you deal with varying numbers of participants in your session?:

The project is designed to be participant-driven in terms of uploading recordings. Variation in participation is to be expected and would not be a barrier to either the goals or the outcome. Participants can upload their contributions either synchronously during the Mozfest session itself or asynchronously before or after the Mozfest session.

What is the goal and/or outcome of your session?:

The goal of the project will be to co-create an audio fiction experiment for participants to take part in a shared story about AI and wellness. The project can create a virtual community. The outcome will be an audio file which will be shared through a live broadcast on DS106 Radio and on Glogster - https://edu.glogster.com/glog/the-post-digital-audio-quilt-mozfest-2021/4be6el2lnhw. The goals and outcomes can evolve as the project is open and participant-driven. The use of the 'quilt' metaphor is to be understood as something caring/comforting, a safe space to express and share knowledge and ideas within a community, a bit like an 'audio tapestry' of thought.

We're hoping that many efforts and discussions will continue after Mozfest. Share any ideas you already have for how to continue the work from your session.:

The podcast does not have to be the end of the project. Further podcasts/episodes can be co-created and shared through live broadcasts in order that the story can continue. A regular radio programme with guests to contribute ideas about AI wellness. Mozfest could be the catalyst for the development of a podcast.
