Many have fallen victim to having their personally identifiable stolen or compromised. These pieces of information find their way to a black market for sale to the highest bidder. This leads to prevalent cases of identity theft, loss of funds among other heinous crimes.
In a 30 minutes discussion with the participants and thereafter question and answer session, we will focus on:
1. Highlighting the rapidly rising cases involving data theft.
2. Educating on the various forms that data theft could take.
3. Featuring case studies of these real live scenarios.
4. Real demos of such methods in action.
5. Ways to secure one's data from theft.
6. Technologies that assist in data security.
7. How to spread the word
Our aim is to significantly empower our communities with knowledge of how to secure their personal data and eventually stagnate the rapidly increasing cases of data breaches.
Having been selected as one of the Mozilla Open Leaders X, I and my colleague established a training and mentoring program on digital safety in Kenya. This program has seen graduation of the first cohort of digital safety champions who have since started their own mentoring programs in their local communities.
We also have a detailed guide of Accessible Online Security resources coupled with a github repo. By presenting in Mozfest 2021, I will be continuing with the work that I am passionate about in Educating the masses on digital safety.
We also have a website:https://digital-safety.net/
I shall therefore engage with my participants by sharing resources and welcoming their participation for the conferences we hold as well as attending sessions for the Cohort 2 that I will be running in 2021 under the Digisafety program.
What is the goal and/or outcome of your session?:The aim of the session is to inform and explore with the participants the various ways that their data can be compromised as they access the internet both on computers and mobile devices. Additionally, we shall explore the requirements of the applications they use to ensure data safety and propose the alternative applications to use that ensure data security through encryption, obfuscation and privacy.
Also, we shall dive in email security since this is a common channel of communication and how to avoid phishing campaigns by malicious actors.
Finally, the participants shall be taken through a data hygiene session where they will be able to set up their own security features both at home and office setup eg. private networks.
The participants will then be expected to pass on what they learn and their experience with data security to their local communities. They shall be advocates for Digital Safety.
My engagement with the participants is scalable to the size. The content is also non technical and no jargon used to cater for the non technical people. There is also use of illustrations and real life instances to showcase how data breaches occur and how to prevent it so that it is easy to understand.
The content shall also be available on our website, and participants of my session will be free to visit the site as they wish.
For the discussion, I will take questions pre-session so that I organize responses and save time in case the number of participants is over 20. The adoption of walk through is aimed at ensuring the participants get hands on experience and also to cement understanding.
