Wikipedia and its sister projects contain a treasure trove of open knowledge content in 300+ languages that can be used by anyone for free. In recent years, technology partners from around the world have become increasingly interested in leveraging Wikimedia’s APIs to reuse this content on their platforms, in order to add context to and enrich their reading and learning experiences. How can we use Wikimedia content to create and deliver new relevant, just-in-time experiences to a diverse global audience? How can we ensure that new reuse products remain freely licensed and open to contribution? In this session, we will explore ways that Wikimedia APIs have been used to access and reuse Wikimedia content to date, and invite our participants to brainstorm new API-assisted reuse workflows that can help fulfill Wikimedia’s mission of sharing the sum of all human knowledge globally.
We’ll plan to make our contact information available and follow up with any participants who want to speak more. We’ll also plan to follow up with participants who have ideas or use-cases for reuse partnerships that align well with our organizational goals for further discussion and collaboration.
What is the goal and/or outcome of your session?:Our goals are to:
1. Educate participants on the capabilities of Wikimedia APIs for enriching the reading/learning experience on third-party platforms with free, open content
2. Collaboratively brainstorm new ways that Wikimedia content can help serve readers on third-party platforms committed to open web principles
3. Understand the unique needs and challenges of technologists in the diverse global Mozilla/open web community
A small session would be just fine, allowing us to deep-dive into who the participants are, why they’re interested in Wikimedia APIs, and what ideas they have for Wikimedia content reuse projects. For a large session, we’ll plan to collaboratively choose 2-3 participants’ goals/use-cases to deep-dive on, which can hopefully be generalized to the larger audience.
