Openscapes Interview with Dr. Dawn Wright

In this conversation with Dr. Dawn Wright, we will discuss the connections between the open science movement, democratized tech, solution-driven science, and climate change. Dr. Wright (@DeepSeaDawn) is American geographer and oceanographer. She is Chief Scientist at ESRI (the Environmental Systems Research Institute), a National Geographic Global Explorer, a Lego enthusiast, and a role model to many in science.

This session is part of Openscapes' growing efforts to increase visibility and value of open, reproducible, and inclusive data-driven practices in science and research. The conversation will be led by Erin Robinson and Julia Lowndes of Openscapes. Openscapes was founded by Julia Lowndes as a 2018-2019 Mozilla Fellow, is modeled after Mozilla Open Leaders, and was launched at MozFest 2018. Learn more: https://openscapes.org

We're hoping that many efforts and discussions will continue after Mozfest. Share any ideas you already have for how to continue the work from your session.:

This will be the first in a new free, monthly event series that Openscapes will lead to engage a broader community around open data and research practices. Yet to be fully defined, this event series will be somewhere between a podcast and a community call (maybe it will be a "podcall"). Since Openscapes has its origins with Mozilla, we think kicking off this event series at MozFest will be very significant and inclusive, and we will communicate around the event in this way.

How will you deal with varying numbers of participants in your session?:

The interview will be engaging no matter the number of participants, and we will record it so that it is available to others to review asynchronously as well. If possible with the technology, we plan to use breakout groups to allow participants to develop questions using the 1-2-4 method: 1 min to write down your idea, 2 mins to share in pairs, 4 mins to share in groups of 4 and then suggest 1 question from the group in the chat (breakout groups might make a modified 1-4 method more realistic). If there are few participants, we will have just 1 breakout room.

Julia Lowndes founded Openscapes to champion kinder, better science in less time. She is a marine ecologist, open data scientist, and a 2019 Mozilla Fellow.
