Teach The Web, without the Web

We practically live ONLINE. This tendency has brought the world together. Be it education, business, or employment, Internet has made global communication more better and easier. It has become a crucial part of our lives, but millions of people still lack the skills and resources to access it. I want to introduce solutions for communities with low/no connectivity to learn basic web skills.

I propose a session to share offline activities through which we can teach and learn Web Literacy. Since this is a participatory workshop, participants can create their own unique activities as we progress.

This session will demonstrate how communities with little/no internet connectivity can improve their web literacy skills and how they can take what they learn forward and spread web literacy in other regions as well.

How will you deal with varying numbers of participants in your session?:

This format of event does not depend on the number of crowd attending it. But we can have some activities according to the crowd. Like if we have an audience limited to 10-15 people, we can have them participate and brainstorm and come up with more ideas for offline tool kits and activities. If the crowd exceeds that, even then we can do so. But along with that, we can understand how much impact does this session make with a larger crowd. This will be helpful, if we are to test this session format in a school, where there are hundreds of students and a very very limited internet.

What is the goal and/or outcome of your session?:

N/A

We're hoping that many efforts and discussions will continue after Mozfest. Share any ideas you already have for how to continue the work from your session.:

We have tested and used these activities at our regional workshops in and around our city in India. This helped people of all ages learn about basic web concepts. For ex., at a workshop we used offline activities to train a group of middle aged women and empower them on how they can do daily activities on the internet, such as shopping, internet banking, or a training workshop for students by using everyday props such as cardboard and papers to teach them web basics etc.
