Sustainable and Just: Shaping futures for circular digital technologies
Language: English (mozilla)

Can you imagine a world in which we can all harness the power of digital technologies to support a just and sustainable world? Can you imagine digital technologies that respond to the needs and priorities of communities most affected by environmental degradation and climate injustice? Do you see these technologies already in your life? What are their characteristics?

In 2021, the Association for Progressive Communications (APC) launched a guide to a circular economy of digital devices, rooted in the experiences and work of our network. A guide to a circular economy of digital devices aims to increase awareness of the complex harms caused by current linear models of production, use and disposal of digital devices, and deepen understanding among our network of the immense potential for change at every level of engagement.

A workshop at MozFest 2022 aims to explore together how we are shaping a circular economy of digital devices in our diverse communities and contexts. One intended outcome of this workshop is to identify contributions to the development of further modules and case studies for APC guide to a circular economy of digital devices, expanding its scope and maintaining it as a living resource.

What is the goal and/or outcome of your session?

The goal of this workshop is to explore how individuals and communities are shaping a circular economy of digital devices in diverse contexts, rooted in our shared commitment to justice and sustainability.

We hope that participants in the workshop will have increased awareness, resources and insight into practical steps towards shaping a just and sustainable circular economy.

One intended outcome of this workshop is the development of further modules and case studies for APC's guide to a circular economy of digital devices, expanding its scope and maintaining it as a living resource.

Why did you choose that space? How does your session align with the space description?

The Sustainability and Climate Change space at MozFest an a valuable opportunity for diverse conversations across the landscape of digital and environmental justice.

This workshop aims to address some of the questions outlined in the description for the Sustainability and Climate Change space, including visions for just and equitable access to sustainable technology and infrastructure, and the potential to reuse and re-purpose technologies in interesting ways.

How will you deal with varying numbers of participants in your session? What if 30 participants attend? What if there are 3?

We are excited to discuss the guide with anyone who is interested to participate in the proposed workshop, and will have a flexible structure for the session to ensure meaningful participation. We recognize that in-depth discussion is difficult in a large group, and would convene breakout discussions based on the number and the interests of participants. We want each participant to have an opportunity to share their perspectives, and feel comfortable following up with us directly after the session.

What happens after MozFest? We're hoping that many efforts and discussions will continue after MozFest. Share any ideas you already have for how to continue the work from your session.

After MozFest, we will prepare a report of discussion and identify opportunities to connect participants with the ongoing development of a guide to a circular economy of digital devices.
