MozFest 2022

Developing Agency over Media and Media Technologies
Language: English (mozilla)

Digital media technologies have been vital in the creation and dissemination of narratives. Portrayals of African Americans, their experiences, and their histories have been disregarded. Moreover, college students' immersion in these technologies has compromised their ability to critique societal structures and the media texts that portray them. Digital, financial, and media literacies among African American students are necessary, as development of these literacies enable them to create meaning in their lives and communicate their histories. This discussion will examine the process of enfranchising students of color to dismantle destructive hegemonic structures by developing agency over media and media technologies.

What is the goal and/or outcome of your session?:

The presenters endeavor to employ pedagogical strategies in three areas: visual media (the eyes), aural media (the ears), and narrative storytelling (the mouth). The goal of this session is to explore how marginalized media creators can combat inequitable societal structures by engaging with media, creating financial autonomy, and harnessing media literacy skills to critique the wider culture.

Why did you choose that space? How does your session align with the space description?:

This session finds alignment with the Rethinking Power & Ethics space through its focus on strategies to help digital natives overcome the negative cognitive, financial, and ideological effects of immersion in social and digital media. The presenters address these limitations and promote ownership of the methods and means of production while emphasizing the greater context of dismantling oppressive power structures.

How will you deal with varying numbers of participants in your session? What if 30 participants attend? What if there are 3?:

We are planning for a flexible session that we can adjust in order to accommodate a varying number of attendees. We envision a discussion session centered on knowledge sharing with multiple opportunities and prompts throughout for discussion and Q and A. However, if fewer participants attend the session, we will cultivate more intimate environment by shortening the knowledge sharing portion of the session and focusing on discussion and analysis of the subject with participants.

What happens after MozFest? We're hoping that many efforts and discussions will continue after MozFest. Share any ideas you already have for how to continue the work from your session.:

Our session is one part of a long-term effort to mobilize educators, mentors, and media practitioners to incorporate pedagogies that empower students of color to dismantle destructive hegemonic structures. After MozFest, we will continue to facilitate workshops, interactive sessions and talks, as well as physical and virtual discussions on the subject. We love keeping in contact with people we meet at conferences and gatherings, and we encourage participants to engage with us via social media, connect with us at future events, and connect with us through our work at Howard University. We believe there are many interconnected spaces surrounding digital media and empowerment of BIPOC and we are receptive to dialogue and collaborations focused on that mission.
