GLAMs’ public interest mission is squarely aligned with the open access ethos. Indeed, making their collections as openly accessible, shareable, and reusable as possible is the best way for GLAMs to achieve their mission as they digitize and offer their collections online. But only a tiny fraction of the world’s GLAMs share their collections through open access initiatives. GLAMs face a host of barriers to embracing open access. At Creative Commons, we want to help GLAMs overcome these barriers, unlock universal access to knowledge and culture. Our Open GLAM Program will build a coordinated global effort to help GLAMs make the content they steward openly available and reusable for the public good.
Learning outcomes: GLAMs (galleries, libraries, archives and museums) fulfill the invaluable mission of caring for our rich cultural heritage — sharing it should be top priority.
Digitized cultural heritage material should be shared online in the broadest way possible, allowing the public to access, use, reuse and recreate it.
Through our Open GLAM program, Creative Commons supports GLAMs in ensuring better sharing of cultural heritage.
Why did you choose that space? How does your session align with the space description?:Creative Commons is poised to create a more global, inclusive, and equitable picture and understanding of open GLAM, highlighting the needs and expectations of a variety of communities and institutions from diverse regions and backgrounds.
How will you deal with varying numbers of participants in your session? What if 30 participants attend? What if there are 3?:The fewer the participants, the more interactive the session can be. If 30 attend, we can have a formal presentation followed by Q&A, if there are 3, we could have a more informal dialogue, equally informative.
