What's it like inside a data center? Entangled cables? Loud sound of machines running? Hot and cold air flowing in the room? Engineers swapping hardwares?

We will take a field trip to Science Park to experience all of the above and much more, and have an informal discussion on the tangible, material cloud infrastructures behind the internet and AI, and their social, political and environmental implications.

**Practical information - UPDATE ON 9 JUNE:**
We have reached the max number of participants we can accommodate and have a long waitlist. Therefore we're closing the sign-up form early.
Mona Chalabi, journalist and keynote speaker is joining us at MozFest House Amsterdam!

Her work has earned her a Pulitzer Prize, a fellowship at the British Science
Association, an Emmy nomination, and recognition from the Royal Statistical
Society.

Her work is rooted in humanizing data and unveiling statistical research around social and economic justice issues including police violence, viral transmission, the cost of dying, and more.

At MozFest House Amsterdam, you will hear directly from Mona about the importance and urgency of distilling statistical data, and data in general, into humanized information to make visible social and economic injustice.

From candlelight to Pepper’s ghost, the printing press to the internet, theatre has always embraced emergent technologies to tell and share its stories. For over a decade, the Royal Shakespeare Company have been committed to exploring the
future of performance, and what these new forms mean for how artist make and audiences engage.

When transposing live performance from stage to online platforms, what are we leaving in the space in-between? How does AI decision-making impact performance in translation? What does the future hold for artists in the age of AI?
Members of the Royal Shakespeare Company will present a theatre performance, unique to Mozfest that happens both live and online. Join Sarah Ellis (Director of Digital Development), Ruthie Doyle (RSC Digital
Associate) and James Turnbull (Digital Producer) for a provocation on how and why
a theatre company are re-engineering their model to meet the needs of the future.

The Shape of the Cloud: Democratizing Decision-Making on Computational Infrastructure

Digital sovereignty is becoming increasingly a business niche rather than a genuine alternative to corporate giant monopolists. In an attempt to counter this trend, this workshop will bring together activists and researchers to discuss how to foster public participation in decision-making on data centres. Rather than focus on a single case of resistance, we will aim to find common ground between different data struggles. Contestation of computational infrastructure has taken place in many separate national and regional contexts. What is direly missing still are opportunities for collaboration, exchange of experience, and building common fronts across these diverse experiences.
Corporate monopolists have skillfully used the rhetoric of 'sharing', while engaging in a process of vertical integration and making themselves indispensable for public communication. The workshop aims to foster popular sovereignty across borders and build towards collective mobilization that uses an alternative rhetoric of solidarity. Solidarity against extractivism across the technological stack. But also solidarity in the search for alternatives to corporate giants and their profit driven model. With these broader goals in mind, we will collectively identify common problems as well as concrete strategies for engagement with local, regional and national executives and legislatures to ensure that citizens voices are heard. No computation without popular representation.

Exploring the Intersection of AI, Democracy, and Civic Responsibility

This proposal looks into the intersection of AI and democracy, focusing on challenges like disinformation and transparency while exploring opportunities for trust-building and community engagement. Central to our approach is Real411, a civic tech platform designed to combat online harms and nurture resilience.

Real411 harnesses AI to mitigate the spread of disinformation, empowering users to validate information and contribute to a culture of seeking credible information. By fostering transparency and accountability, the platform aims to cultivate community ownership, ensuring users are exercising their right to make informed decisions based on credible information.

By fostering transparency and accountability, the platform also empowers users to actively engage in civic discourse and decision-making processes. In essence, Real411 is a gateway for citizens to actively participate in shaping their communities and exercising their democratic rights.

Through collaborative efforts between technologists, policymakers, and civil society, we seek to leverage Real411 as a catalyst for democratic renewal in the digital age.

Resilient Voices: Navigating Climate Justice Through Indigenous Wisdom

In a race to respond to the multiple and strongly interlinked planetary crises facing us, we are witnessing diverse greenwashing efforts across states and industries. Dominating efforts to save one’s own yard obscure people's realities in other parts of the world increasingly threatened by destructive and extractive practices. Yet, these spatially distant ecosystems and the Indigenous wisdom held within them are pivotal for nurturing an emergent, regenerative future.

This installation will use sound and visual elements to stimulate an immersive experience that breaks through geographic boundaries. It invites participants on a sonic and visual journey of climate resilience through local languages and Indigenous wisdom in Indonesia — a country in Asia Pacific, rich in linguistic diversity and biodiversity. With over 700 languages and thousands of islands surrounded by oceans and forests, Indonesia's Indigenous communities face threats from the climate crisis. It risks the loss of their cultural and ecological knowledge, and excludes them from technological advancements like AI-driven language tech. Engaging in dialogues with communities in Bali, Sulawesi, and Sumatra, where languages such as Balinese, Buginese, and Minangkabau are spoken and communities of various genders and identities live, we explore the intricate relationship between nature and its co-habitants.

From a planetary justice lens, we examine how technology and power dynamics rooted in colonial history impact the delicate balance of ecosystems and Indigenous communities, and what implications this holds for ecological resilience. We've collected open-access language corpora with these communities and are developing AI systems to preserve languages and ecological knowledge, debunk climate myths, and centre marginalized voices often excluded from these conversations.

Inclusivity for individuals with disabilities and LGBTQIA+ communities in technology and environmental justice initiatives requires shifting agency and deliberate strategies to promote their active participation and representation while addressing historical exploitation. Recorded climate and environmental stories in this installation offer opportunities for listeners to immerse themselves in knowledge of ecological resilience and inclusive tech development.

This installation aims to challenge prevailing narratives and co-envisions actionable strategies for a planetary and socially just future in the face of the climate crisis.

Artificial Intelligence in Dutch Regional Newsrooms : Prospects and Perspectives

Within the last two decades, journalism has experienced a technological revolution that has led to high economic disruption with declining advertising revenues, shrinking subscription numbers, and austerity measures. This shift is concerning particularly to regional or local journalism, as local news media organizations are at increased risk of being at the disadvantaged end of the technological knowledge and adoption gap. Regional/local journalism is essential to the public sphere as the audience’s interests or concerns often focus on what is happening in their local communities and not solely on global or national issues. By initiating and facilitating conversations primarily covering events of regional relevance, local journalism is (still) forming the backbone of democratic deliberation and public oversight. Even global or national news stories are interpreted and contextualized by local news media, providing local angles and insights relevant to their audiences.

The transformative potential of Artificial Intelligence, as the most recent of these digital technologies, has triggered strategic responses from media organizations. While it might benefit media organizations to adopt these new technologies to remain relevant in the competitive media market, there is still plenty of untapped potential for regional/local journalism to seize the technological innovation’s manifold possibilities. On the other hand, with a lack of comprehensive organizational strategy towards the adoption of AI, integration of AI technologies in regional/local newsrooms are at times experimental without sufficient reflection on the ethical and legal complexities.

Given this context, this session will facilitate a discussion on these prospects through the panel participants offering different perspectives. We intend to provide a collective platform for the thoughts of academic experts in journalism, AI and journalists from regional news media organizations in the Netherlands.

Over the past decade, [Ranking Digital Rights](https://rankingdigitalrights.org/) (RDR) has advanced transparency on digital rights among the world’s most powerful technology and telecommunications companies. Its benchmarking and research on companies’ policies and practices has been widely recognised as a gold standard on freedom of expression and privacy in the tech sector. Since January 2024, RDR has continued this work as part of the [World Benchmarking Alliance](https://www.worldbenchmarkingalliance.org/) (WBA).

Working with researchers and civil society organisations around the world, RDR holds digital technology companies to account. Since 2021, RDR has supported 18 independent [research adaptations](https://rankingdigitalrights.org/global-engagement/) that used our human rights-based standards to evaluate more than 120 local and regional companies across 38 countries.

This session will share learnings from RDR’s global advocacy and engagement work while crowdsourcing ideas for bringing civil society and researchers together. We will showcase freely available resources we have developed to lower the barrier of entry to corporate accountability research, including the [RDR Research Lab](https://rankingdigitalrights.org/research-lab/) and [Scorecard Toolkit](https://rankingdigitalrights.org/toolkit/).

The session is an opportunity for individuals to come together to share their experiences and learnings with working to hold companies to account on their actions and commitments to digital rights.

Digital workers, unite! For a fair, equal and just future.

The growth of digital economy should belong to everyone. More so to the significant percentage of digital platform workforce that power this AI revolution as the ‘humans behind the tech’. Platform economy is seeing exponential growth around the globe and provides jobs and livelihood to millions of workers, many of whom rely on it as their primary source of income. The promise of flexible and independent work often pales in front of the minimum protections, low wages, and limited rights that the workers enjoy. How can we envision a future that is unified, fair, and just when the very backbone of this digital economy – digital workers – are left on their own to navigate the labyrinth of uncertainty and exploitation?

This session confronts these realities of the AI-driven labour market. It offers a safe space to worker representatives, their allies and policy stakeholders to question if the global efforts adequately address barriers and complement the national efforts around tailored regulations. Are the perspectives of workers, their advocates, and innovative organizations like platform cooperatives considered when designing policies? Which data-driven solutions exist for workers and their allies? Can AI even help resolve the issues that its development is causing?

We invite participants to engage in a thought-provoking debate which looks at the humans behind the platforms and the implications of the current AI trajectory on their (and our) collective future. Global experts and institutions committed to fairness and equality will share insights and initiatives to encourage broader collaboration. From essential skills and awareness to data-driven tools and regulatory strategies, experts will reveal effective solutions and ideas to address power imbalances and workers' struggles within AI. This session aims to inspire action, whether you are a tech entrepreneur, advocate, consumer, or policy stakeholder in our digital era.

MethaneMapper: An AI transformer model to track methane emissions from aerial imagery

Methane emissions pose a significant, yet often underestimated, threat to our environment. This potent greenhouse gas, while less prevalent than carbon dioxide, is 85 times more effective at trapping heat in the atmosphere, making it a critical target in the fight against global warming. The dangers of methane are exacerbated by its invisibility and the difficulty in detecting and quantifying its sources effectively.

The urgency to address methane emissions cannot be overstated. Due to methane’s high global warming potential, immediate action is imperative to prevent its accumulation in the atmosphere. The current climate crisis demands technologies that can swiftly and accurately identify and quantify methane emissions to mitigate their impact effectively.

Equally important is the democratization of this information. Everyone, irrespective of their location or background, deserves access to data about environmental pollutants like methane. Such transparency empowers communities, particularly those in vulnerable regions, to advocate for their health and environmental safety. It also fosters a broader understanding and engagement with environmental issues, paving the way for global cooperation in sustainability efforts.

In response to these challenges, our team at EyeClimate Inc. developed "MethaneMapper," an innovative tool designed to revolutionize how we detect and manage methane emissions. MethaneMapper is an open-source, AI-powered hyperspectral imaging tool that provides accurate, wide-area detection of methane emissions by analyzing overhead, airborne hyperspectral images. Unlike traditional methods that rely on ground or localized measurements prone to manipulation, MethaneMapper uses advanced AI algorithms, including a hyperspectral transformer network and contrastive learning, to trace emissions back to their sources while minimizing false positives. This tool was recognized for its groundbreaking contributions at the prestigious CVPR2023 conference.

The implications of deploying MethaneMapper are profound. By making invisible methane emissions visible, we can hold responsible parties accountable and drive the adoption of cleaner practices. This technology arms frontline communities, environmental activists, and policymakers with the data necessary to push for stricter regulations and reparations. Ultimately, MethaneMapper’s long-term impact lies in its potential to transform pollution monitoring globally, fostering sustainable management practices and informed policymaking that protect human health and the environment.

Measuring the carbon footprint of software using CodeCarbon

CodeCarbon is an open-source Python package that estimates the carbon footprint of computer programs by measuring the energy consumption and carbon emissions of hardware. It was created 5 years ago and has become the de-facto standard for measuring the carbon emissions of different kinds of computer code. AI researchers and data scientists have been among the main users of CodeCarbon, as they use it to estimate the carbon footprint of their AI models, but CodeCarbon is also used more broadly as it comes with an optional command line interface and does not require coding skills.
The workshop will cover the environmental impact of computing and AI, ranging from the electricity it uses and how it is generated and the growing environmental footprint of AI due to the growing size of AI models and the quantity of computation they require. We will do a quick overview of work in the field and talk about the factors that are at play when calculating the carbon footprint of a piece of code- namely, the hardware being used, the compute time, and how the electricity being used was generated.
We will follow up with an interactive demo of CodeCarbon, showing how it works in a Jupyter notebook and via a command line interface. We will prepare several pieces of code that participants can run, both locally on their laptops and via Google Colab in order to compare different types of hardware, such as GPUs and TPUs. We will also demonstrate how to use the dashboard to visualize emissions and how they compare to common equivalents, like driving a car and heating a house.
Finally, we will conclude with a set of best practices for reducing the carbon footprint of code - such as choosing a low-carbon compute server, doing experimentation before running compute-intensive processes, and optimizing scripts to make them more lightweight.
Via this session, we hope to inspire our audience to both quantify the carbon emissions of their code and take steps to reduce them, in order to contribute to a more sustainable computing future.

The Digital Age finds humanity in a dire connection crisis. In the age of ever-increasing digital dependence, we find ourselves further and further divorced from ourselves, our community, and nature. In such times, traditional connotations and frameworks of philanthropy as “giving” will fall short of today’s needs. Philanthropy must be reimagined and repackaged as “first response.” How might first-response philanthropy help cultivate a deeper connection to ourselves and to those around us? **H+1: The Humanity Impact Fund** is an emerging global initiative led by visionary John Mack, founder of Life Calling, dedicate"d to preserving our humanity in the Digital Age.

Every message you send, show you stream and podcast you download carries a cost to the climate. By how much? Cars have tailpipes and factories have smokestacks but computers have neither. The environmental cost of making hardware and using software is often abstracted away. AI is complicating the issue: artificial intelligence requires significant energy to train and companies creating these tools, in many cases, hide how much. How can we improve what isn’t measured? We talk with Maya Richman, Benoît Courty, Lea Wulf and Esther Mwema about ways to reveal the internet’s invisible carbon footprint.

In October 2023, participants at the Creative Commons Global Summit proposed 7 principles for making AI work for Creators and the Commons. In early 2024, Open Future, Karisma, and Creative Commons hosted an interactive Alignment Assembly to better understand the extent to which these principles are shared by the broader open movement, and where the principles may generate controversy. The Assembly was designed to better understand the attitudes of content creators and curators working with open licenses towards the regulation of generative AI. In this session, we will present the results of this process for discussion with participants and explore options to put these principles into action, including through signal preferences.

Digital Commons as Infrastructure: Emerging Use Cases

Digital commons – community-governed digital resources – are increasingly perceived as potential providers of public digital infrastructure to enhance sovereignty, competition and accessibility of services. ‘Infrastructure’, in this sense, can be understood as systems that are perceived as having society-wide economic or social functions, and digital infrastructure can therefore be seen as the wide range of digital technologies which provide these society-wide functions, for example critical digital/Internet stack functions, foundations for digital government, or access to digital public spaces.

In this view, building digital commons and deploying them as infrastructure can be seen as a way for governments to reclaim technology and positively shape its future in the public interest. But what distinguishes digital commons specifically from merely ‘open source’ or ‘public interest’ technologies? What makes digital commons ideally positioned to work as (public) digital infrastructure? And can a commons-first approach to infrastructure support digital sovereignty while improving public services, public spaces, public administration, etc?

This session will dive into the question of digital commons as infrastructure, looking at the unique dynamics at play in communal production, ownership, and governance of digital commons at infrastructure-scale. It will aim to bridge the gap in understanding between policymakers and technologists on how to better understand the relevance of this nascent area, highlighting questions like licensing, contribution, maintenance, funding, and sustainability. It will also consider emerging examples of how the value of digital commons is being explored through current efforts and initiatives, both in Member States of the EU and more broadly.

Participants will engage in collaborative activities designed to scale the impacts of generative AI on Black imaginaries and vice versa. Emphasizing co-creation and community involvement, we will collectively discuss strategies to build AI systems and more equitable uses that reflect the importance of Black imaginaries especially in the axes of past and present, death and life.

The concept of Black Imaginaries is a transformative framework based on critical race theory and Afrofuturist perspectives. By centering Black imaginaries, we aim to not only mitigate bias but also cultivate innovation and social justice in the development of AI. At the end of the workshop, participants will gain practical insights to advocate for anti-racist practices in their organizations and communities.

Join if you want to reimagine AI ethics through the lens of Black imaginaries, charting a path toward a fairer and more equitable technology landscape.

The EU's AI Act has been adopted, but the work isn't done. What does it take to make implementation of the law a success? And how can civil society ensure that the AI Act will actually make AI more fair and inclusive?

In this workshop, we map the timeline, strategic opportunities for civil society, and next steps during the AI Act’s implementation phase. We also explore what participating organizations will be focusing on in their work, what they need to do so successfully, and how participants - advocates, technologists, and researchers - can get involved and support each other during the implementation phase.

Challenging the techno-solutionism of the Twin Transition

The "Twin Transition" paradigm pushed forward by institutions part of the European Union and the United Nations considers digitization and environmental sustainability to be two mutually reinforcing processes. The idea is that technologies can be made greener; and that greener technologies can accelerate the arrival of a more sustainable society. However, climate and environmental justice movements around the world argue that the techno-solutionism of this transition strategy props up discourses of climate delay and distraction; avoids the tackling of structural issues, and intensifies unjust dynamics of “green extractivism”, colonialism, and Eurocentrism.

In this session, we unpack the assumptions that the “twin transition” is based on. Our goal is to build a critical understanding of how digital rights advocates and practitioners coming from a background in digital technologies can productively engage on this nexus of issues.
Through collaborative brainstorming we explore: who benefits from the Twin Transition paradigm and who pays the price? Amongst the central topics we cover, we will look at how, at EU level, the push for so-called “green” tech is leading to an ever-greater demand for critical minerals, leading to concerns around the “green extractivism” of mining and an expressed need to “secure” technological supply chains. How is the need for critical minerals feeding into narratives of securitization, and what implications does that have for human rights, digital rights, and social justice?

Finally, we will spend time visioning how to work towards a more just approach to technologies in the context of climate and environmental crises, looking at examples of how social movements and policy makers around the world are already fighting for a truly just transition. Looking at the long-standing work of the global climate justice movement to push back against “false climate solutions” such as solar geoengineering and carbon offsets, we will ask how this work can inform advocacy around the role of digital technologies in mitigating climate and environmental crises.

Designing Towards a Better Future for the Web: A New Generation Brainstorm

We invite Mozilla Festival attendees passionate about the next generation of the Web to join us in a participatory brainstorm, where we explore ways we can tackle 1-2 issues we face online today and design potential solutions to address these problems.

Proposed Agenda:

-Introduction + Brief History of Mozilla + Our Values

-Walkthrough of the Design Double Diamond + 8-Ups Exercise

-Explore the Problem: People will be broken out into teams by table to discuss one of the topics and important problems related to said topics.

-Find Ideas!: Based on their experiences and assumptions, teams can design/describe potential solutions.

-Share the Wealth: Teams will nominate 1-2 speaker(s) to summarize their chat (problems and ideas). Speakers will summarize these learnings to all attendees in the room.

-Hosts' Recap of Ideas + Closing

Sample Topics:
How has the tech industry not served you?
--How can we manage our relationship with AI?
--What do you feel are some risks and problems with social media?

Mozilla employees will moderate an facilitate discussion through the course of the session.

What we hope participants will take away from this group mindshare:
-More perspectives of how we engage with tech day-to-day, including Gen Z
-Increased awareness of the risks of non-inclusive tech
-A model to first identify critical social problems and then design and test solutions to address them.

Gardening as Electricity Making

We invite you to 'Gardening as Electricity Making', a workshop that celebrates the interplay of earth, electricity, life and the internet.

First we introduce the 'Tree-001' project, of which the workshop is part. It is an artistic research project that aims to synchronize the network infrastructure with the life cycle of a tree. Then there will be a brief presentation about the technology of Microbial Fuel Cells and Earth Batteries. These are ways to make electricity from soil, one using the metabolism of anaerobic bateria, and one using the chemical reaction between the metal electrode and soil. Artist Sunjoo Lee will take you through her research on making these cells.

The rest of the workshop is a hands-on session in which we make mud cells with soil and water. We will bury the electrodes in the mud and measure the low current the cells produce with multimeters. We will also try to power an Arduino and a self-made radio transmitter with the cells.

Then we will have a discussion altogether about the possibilities of electricity from the ground, and how to create and maintain a garden that can power small electronic devices.

If possible, bring your own soil and containers. If not, you can use the soil and containers we provide. The containers can be any shape and size between approximately 500 ml and 2 L, should be able to hold mud and should be non-conductive. Lid is not necessary.

'It looks like this request may violate our content policy' - Censored: Sexual & Reproductive Health & Rights

Have you ever tried to post seemingly-innocent and/or informative education content on social media to discover it’s quickly been removed, had a Meta advert automatically rejected for publication, found your account shadow-banned on social media, or your website removed and suddenly inaccessible?!

For many everyday people - but particularly for Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) practitioners and sexuality educators - this is the everyday reality of simply sharing your knowledge with the world, as automated decision-making and algorithms execute strategies to censor and monitor SRHR content globally.

In this discussion, Share-Net International (SNI), RNW Media, and Center for Intimacy Justice (CIJ) unpack some of the problems faced by the online SRHR world. From automated content moderation based on politicised and sexist community guidelines, disinformation networks, and unfair policies, to search engines marking educational content as ‘mature’ (aka pornographic), algorithmic discrimination exacerbating gender biases and denying access to comprehensive healthcare, and court cases declaring it possible to ‘partially unblock’ abortion-information websites demonstrating the knowledge disparities between those with legal-decision making power and technology, the panelists will guide you through a variety of often absurd problems the SRHR world faces through tech-censorship and related issues. The discussion will further cover topics like data privacy, period-tracking apps and the links to reproductive justice, how DALL.E banned abortion pill art, the digital erasure of non-binary people, Jordan's new CyberCrime law impacting LGBTQIA+ people, criminalising free speech and punishing those publishing SRHR information, how digital suppression prevents access to health services, and other examples of systemic inequalities being reinforced by proxy!

On a more positive note, we'll also discuss methods for creating inclusive, transparent, and accessible ecosystems for digital SRHR information, the methods RNW, SNI and CIJ are using to make this a reality, and how you can get involved in changing the future of big-tech policy and SRHR information.

How would you signal your preference about AI training over your content?

Creative Commons has been deeply involved in shaping "better sharing" in the context of generative AI.
We held many consultations including at MozFest House Amsterdam last year, which reveal a great diversity of opinions among creators within the CC community, including artists who use generative AI tools. While we believe it's important for copyright to leave room for people to analyze existing works to create new ones, including by using statistics and machine learning to do so, we know that copyright is only one prism through which AI developments should be considered. We've explored "preference signals " which hold potential to provide an important path to reconcile different interests between those that do and do not wish their content to be used for AI training. How should preferences be expressed? What factors might influence creators' decisions? How would preference signals reside alongside CC licenses? How do these interact with opt ins and opt outs based on copyright? In this workshop, we hope to hear from participants about how best to develop new tools to support creators and sustain a thriving commons.

The Data Future Labs (DFL) Showcase highlights local builders around the world developing data tools and platforms that prioritize the needs and interests of their communities. In the fast-paced world of AI and data the popular discourse and priorities are set by a small but vocal minority. Through the DFL Showcase we hope to highlight and support a more global outlook on Data Futures and bring together dedicated funders ready to prioritize and invest in those futures.

We hosted our first DFL Showcase online in May 2023, our [second Showcase took place in MozFest House Kenya September 2023](https://foundation.mozilla.org/en/data-futures-lab/events/dfl-showcase-kenya-2023/), and this time we’re bringing it to MozFest House Amsterdam 2024.

This edition will be focused on shifting the narrative around what’s possible in data stewardship and Trustworthy AI in Europe. We will present a selection of projects from the Data Futures Lab’s portfolio that are illustrative of what could be done to give more power to people and communities in the age of Artificial Intelligence.

The Solution to Disinformation

The NGO, media development and policymaking communities lack a unified vision for tackling disinformation. This session aims to provide that vision.

First, we outline how hostile disinformation works, then we outline solutions that stem from the analysis of the problem.

Problem analysis: Disinfo is designed to make target states weaker by destroying social cohesion – society works when we share narratives, values and truths. Disinformation works by splitting population segments away from these shared narratives.

The solutions therefore break down into 2 categories.

The first is technical and legislative, and involves preventing hostile content from entering the information eco-system.

The second is about strengthening the narratives that disinfo seeks to destroy. This includes media literacy building, as well as rebuilding consensus around democratic, rights and fact-based narratives. This will be the focus of the rest of the session.

Even without disinformation, cohesion around these narratives has been severely weakened by algorithmic distribution and the fact that people are only served content that they’re already interested in. The model works to connect businesses with interested consumers, but it’s been a disaster for the ideas that should be underpinning our societies.

We will share case studies (produced with the help of AI tools) that show how pro-rights media creators can expand traction for their ideas outside their echo chambers by rethinking targeting and content strategy to bring more people with them and rebuild mainstream consensus.

This strategy – to expand mainstream backing for pro-rights and pro-democracy narratives – is what we see as a key component in the fight against disinformation, as well as in securing future progress on human rights.

Harnessing plural and citizen input to create better AI democratic alignment

The premise: Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) is increasingly taking on roles once performed by humans, raising ethical issues about fairness and adherence to democratic norms. "AI alignment," ethics, and governance aim to address the risks posed by these technologies to ensure they benefit humanity and the world. In the court, the integration of AI is growing, amplifying ethical challenges related to accuracy, bias, transparency, and accountability.

Various countries passed legal frameworks to manage AGI's evolution and application. However, these efforts may face the "regulatory alignment problem," where laws may not adequately tackle specific AI risks or may conflict with other societal and regulatory goals.

To answer these ambiguous questions about risk level, maintaining digital rights, privacy or rightfully, legitimate representation in these new regulation frameworks, we will ask the citizens to express their fear, usefulness for, aspiration, risk perception to guide the legislator’s work with veritable citizen representation.

The synopsis: This event will serve as a pilot for what is known as an “AI Alignment” assembly where participants are asked about their opinions before and throughout the event on the subjects of development, deployment (usage) and governance in a way to

The session: In this session, we will present the underlying organizational process of organizing an AI alignment assembly, a new known moniker for citizen dialogues about AGI. We will also present co-present as facilitators specific project that imagines the ethical deployment of AGI systems to promote democratic themes such as promoting (public) knowledge integrity on the internet, accessibility and generally augmenting public services and access to information.

Democracies need a radical shift in the way they are dealing with the harmful role of social media and other digital platforms in undermining our democracies.

Rather than regulation trying to keep up with technological developments, Defend Democracy proposes to tame the technological transition more pro-actively: in the design phase.

Democracies need to move from regulating content to governing design.

Together with Member of European Parliament Kim van Sparrentak, this session explores how people can shape technology.

Creative Technology for Critical AI Education

In this workshop, we will examine how to build engaging translational projects that make the sociopolitical impacts of emerging technologies such as AI more accessible to the public. Specifically, we will focus on how to leverage creative technology, such as games and interactive explainers, for educational and advocacy purposes. Drawing on projects we have worked on as case studies, we will share our experiences in moving between academic research and public-facing work and give insight into the process of building educational games and interactive experiences for the general public. Simultaneously, we will invite the audience to share their own insights, experiences, and find opportunities for further ideation and collaboration.

The workshop will be structured around giving participants time to play two Mozilla-funded projects we worked on: Survival of the Best Fit (survivalofthebestfit.com), an educational game on AI bias, and The Algorithm (whatsthealgorithm.com), an interactive explainer on social media’s recommendation algorithms. Participants will be invited to give feedback on both projects, while we provide more insight into the behind the scenes that went into different design, development, and writing decisions. Through these projects, we will share (and seek) best practices for creative educational projects, accessible translational work, and navigating the intersection of research, art, and advocacy. While the workshop will be geared to those interested in public-facing tech education, it will be open and accessible to everyone, regardless of field and prior experience, or lack thereof.

Why AI needs intersectional feminism - Challenging the status quo to create an equitable AI future

This interactive discussion session introduces participants to the biases present throughout the AI lifecycle and examines the potential of integrating an intersectional feminist approach into AI development and deployment. Despite significant progress in artificial intelligence, current AI systems often perpetuate existing disparities and inequalities, adversely affecting marginalised and underrepresented communities.

While efforts to create ethical, inclusive AI have been made, these approaches often fall short in addressing power dynamics and their role in perpetuating these issues. This session presents a bold vision for reimagining the AI landscape through the lens of intersectional feminist principles, leveraging their long-standing expertise in challenging the status quo.

This session is a deep dive for participants to explore how societal power imbalances manifest itself in AI systems, what is the status quo and it limitations and how intersectional, feminist principles can help create an AI enabled future that works for all.

Outcomes:
Increased awareness of the importance of intersectional feminist principles in AI.
New perspectives on the challenges and opportunities of incorporating these principles into AI design and development.
Collaborative exploration and engaging in reflexivity for creating a more inclusive AI landscape.

A Collaborative Taxonomy of TikTok Experiences

In June, The Mozilla Foundation's Open Source Research & Investigations (OSRI) team will release our FYP Reporter app to enable our community to participate in crowdsourced research into the TikTok Platform. This research is inherently participatory and community-guided – we want to use MozFest House as an opportunity to convene our community to help shape the future of this research program.

If launched in time, we will encourage participants to make use of the FYP Reporter app in advance of the session to share TikToks that have been personally impactful (whether positively or negatively) or represent something they feel is in need of investigation; we will update here when the app is available. Participants will also be able to share their ideas live in the session even if they did not submit any TikToks.

Creative Commons is leading a global conversation towards an international instrument on open culture, possibly a UNESCO Recommendation on Open Culture, in order to recognize the role that open access plays in supporting various cultural policy objectives. As UNESCO points out “a world without culture is a world without a future”, so what role does access to culture play in building unified futures where cultural diversity can flourish and where everyone can enjoy culture as a global public good? This session will present CC's work so far and stimulate a debate with participants, especially to inform the conversation around the potential benefits of artificial intelligence (AI) and other emerging technologies for the public good.

ECNL X DISCORD – Meaningful Engagement to protect Civic Space and Human rights.

In 2022, ECNL and SocietyInside developed a framework for meaningfully engaging external
stakeholders, especially civil society and affected communities, in developing and using AI
systems as well as assessing their impacts on human rights. Our framework for meaningful
engagement (FME) is a valuable tool for digital platforms not only for including external
stakeholders as they build and deploy AI systems internally, but also within their broader
human rights due diligence and compliance obligations.
The goal of our collaboration is to pilot the relevance and usefulness of the FME by applying
it practically to Discord’s real-world use of AI. Discord is a voice, video, and text chat app
that's used by tens of millions of people ages 13+ to talk and hang out with their communities
and friends, they create reliable tech for staying close. The pilot will focus on the needs of
Discord’s Safety ML team as they build models and integrate large language models (LLMs)
in child safety content flagging, user education, and moderation.
Our goal is to ensure that LLMs are used for content governance in a way that protects and
promotes civic space and human rights.

As stakeholder engagement is at the core of this pilot, we want to utilise Mozfest’s unique
participant base to conduct a practical on-site consultation and get participant’s feedback
to the content of the key issues. We are especially excited about engaging a diverse set of
stakeholders globally, from experts in digital rights and AI to marginalised groups and those
with lived experience.

Think Globally, Regulate Locally: Approaches to AI Governance

Across the world, civil society, everyday people, and governments are responding to the AI hype with a real interest in building robust regulatory systems with updated laws responding to the opportunities and ongoing challenges that AI poses to our economy and society. One major area of necessary reform is the concentration of power, data, and resources built into the core infrastructure of AI that magnifies and exacerbates downstream harms—without addressing this concentration of power, AI will only continue the anti-democratic trends that we’ve seen run rampant in the tech sector to date.

At this critical juncture, we’re at a choicepoint: do we continue to let AI grow in scale unregulated, or do we harness the power of this emergent technology to build a new political economy of AI that allows for broad-based prosperity?

Together, we'll explore the different approaches that global jurisdictions from the United States and European Union to India and across the Global South have embraced to rein in concentrated power in AI. Join us to discuss:
- How is power currently concentrated across the AI stack and infrastructure?
- What are the regulatory mechanisms, including antitrust law and industrial policy, that governments across the globe can embrace to rebalance power?
- What can we learn from renewed commitments from around the world to govern AI and ensure a public interest approach to building AI?
- What engagement do we need from civil society and everyday people to create the conditions for these policies and regulations to succeed? How are movements and civil society in different countries reclaiming power from tech and building a world where all of us can thrive in the age of AI?
- What are the lessons and parallels we can draw from the international context to pave the way for a publicly oriented tech ecosystem that passes laws and regulations to constrain the unchecked power of AI and create more space to deliver AI as a democratically accountable public good?
- What does history offer in lessons on how to regulate information technologies to benefit society and deliver broad-based access and prosperity?

A Conversation with Lucia Martis on Poverty in a Digital World

Exploring the dynamic interplay between technology and urban poverty, delving into both the opportunities and risks

In today's increasingly digital world, virtually every aspect of our lives is migrating online. From banking transactions to government interactions, the conveniences are undeniable, yet so are the challenges, also for those facing economic hardship.

In this conversation with Lucia Martis we dive into this multidisciplinary topic. As the founder and director of ProFor Foundation she helps those in Amsterdam South East when it comes to financial difficulties people face. Everyday Lucia witnesses firsthand the struggles of her community, navigating the complex maze of digital systems, government interactions, and tempting "buy now, pay later" services. As an advocate for social justice, Lucia sheds light on the challenges faced by individuals in a digital world.

We have invited Lina Goelzer and Maudi Bernadina to join this conversation. Both women are experts on the topic of participation and technology. Maudi works with the ProFor Foundation, and Lina is an advisor on participation and AI at the municipality of Amsterdam.

In a collaborative research focusing on the intersection of digitisation and poverty, initiated by Digital Rights House in partnership with the ProFor Foundation, both organisations seek to elevate awareness of the impact of technology on people's daily lives.
This session will be led by Rosa Louwerse (Digital Rights House)

Transforming Online Spaces: The Power of AI in Battling Social Media Harassment

At Emakia, we are developing a machine learning system aimed at protecting social media users from harassment. Our project is in the development phase, with a focus on providing immediate support to individuals targeted online. Our model not only screens harassing content but also links victims to supportive resources catered to diverse groups, including LGBTQ+ communities and minority networks.
We hold two patents for this innovative system and use Google’s Vertex AI and Apple’s Core ML to refine our models. Google has supported our efforts with $100,000 worth of services, which has enabled extensive training and data acquisition. We also contribute to the Women Who Code community by sharing updates on our progress.
In collaboration with Montclair NLP Lab, we stress the importance of Trustworthy AI, ensuring that our data inputs and model predictions are both reliable and ethical. Plans are underway to establish a data hub to facilitate academic research and provide resources to the scientific community.

Holding companies to account on ethical AI

In September 2022, the World Benchmarking Alliance (WBA) launched the Collective Impact Coalition for Ethical AI (“CIC for Ethical AI”), a collaborative engagement initiative aimed at driving measurable progress in the adoption of ethical AI principles by digital technology companies assessed under the Digital Inclusion Benchmark. As of April 2024, the initiative comprises 60 investors as well as 12 non-governmental organizations, research institutions, and other entities that collectively form a broad civil society arm. The campaign, builds on the findings of WBA’s Digital Inclusion Benchmark, which has revealed large transparency gaps in companies’ disclosures on ethical AI.
In its first phase (Sep 2022 – Feb 2024), the investor wing of the CIC has coordinated engagement efforts by lead and supporting investors for each company, with the primary aim of eliciting public ethical AI principles from those that lacked them. Through a structured allocation process that incorporated their engagement preferences, investors were assigned lead or supporting roles and sought dialogue with the companies, subsequently reporting on the outcomes in quarterly CIC investor meetings and via reporting forms.
The CIC for Ethical AI is currently in Phase 2. In this new phase, the initiative’s formal scope will expand to include three new expectations of companies, building on the core expectation of publishing their AI principles. Companies will be asked to demonstrate i) how they are implementing their published AI principles; ii) how AI risks are reflected in their human rights impact assessments, and iii) what governance mechanisms underpin the development, deployment, and procurement of AI technology. The CIC will continue to engage with the companies that do not yet have public ethical AI principles. However, its coverage will expand to all 200 companies evaluated in the 2023 Digital Inclusion Benchmark.
The session will share the benchmark findings, the experiences of the CIC and will crowdsource ideas for bringing more members of civil society and investors together. The session is an opportunity for individuals to come together to share their experiences and learnings with working to hold companies to account on their actions and commitments to ethical AI.

Reclaiming Power: Using Ethical AI for More Equitable Futures

The hype and rapid expansion of AI into virtually all sectors of people's lives is largely driven by a few companies in the Global North. This exacerbates inequalities vis-à-vis the Global Majority, especially where the technology neglects and exploits diverse cultural and socioeconomic realities. Biased, untransparent AI datasets and models, as well as extractive data collection practices, are the cause for serious harms and a concentration of power where the few, not the many, benefit.

But a different future for AI as a tool that serves equity-seeking communities is possible. It requires reclaiming power over how we—as national, regional, and global collectives—envision AI tools to be developed by and with communities, and for public benefit.

In this session, we will jointly explore efforts to decentralize power in the AI space, to center on inclusion and diversity as necessary norms for building AI tools, and to nurture the well-being of workers behind the data and models that AI is built on. We will hear from AI and social justice experts who bring examples of how to integrate ethical considerations like bias, fairness, and accountability into AI development, and how to tackle pressing questions on gender, LGBTQIA+ and disability rights. We will confront the question of open-source AI, ownership, and data exploitation within the AI workforce. Who should own AI datasets, and how can their rights be protected? How can AI serve equity-seeking communities and promote social inclusion? Ultimately, we aim to explore how we can translate discussions into actionable solutions, from co-creating data-driven tools to regulatory frameworks. Join us in this action to shaping a more equitable and ethical AI future.

AI as Social Facilitator? Exploring New Roles for AI for Social Debates and Multi-Stakeholder Conversations

AI is traditionally envisioned (and thus) developed as a ‘thinking body’ – a sophisticated decision-making entity that is expected to provide with the best expert answers, resolve conflicts or even command our activities; in these roles, AI is either demonized or idolized.

What if we reimagined AI in a more modest, yet very important and crucial role, as a background enabling element within the social fabric, of facilitator that will neutrally support social debates and complex stakeholder conversations?

In our proposed session, we would like to briefly present two innovative applications of AI in such role:

1.	Mediating complex, multi-stakeholder negotiations surrounding sustainable renovations of private houses in the Netherlands,
and
2.	Facilitating civic community debates about the future of urban development in Eindhoven.

However, our goal is not only inform and inspire participants with these case studies, but also to actively engage them in a discussion about this potential new role for AI. We plan to explore the benefits and, crucially, the risks of misuse or abuse of AI in this role, and brainstorm, or rather body-storm, necessary poka-yoke’s, mistake-proofing mechanisms that should be considered for such AI applications.

For these latter goals we propose an interactive session where participants will enact and embody two scenarios of potential AI misuse in a psychodrama-like format. This will help us to explore the issues deeper (‘skin in the game’) and to collectively identify and present possible community-driven safeguards.

The session is designed for a 90-minute slot and aims to involve 20-25 participants; more participants is a possibility though in this case smaller group of 12-16 will be formed for the interactive session, with the rest shaping an observing and reflecting audience.

This event will be facilitated by two experienced co-moderators:
Slava Kozlov, founder of the innovation research partnership Summ()n Futures,
(slava.kozlov@summn.com)
and

Cees-Jan Mol, who brings the power of AI to communication with VentureSpring,
(ceesjan@venturespring.biz)
both from Eindhoven, the Netherlands.

The fabricated team is proud to propose a workshop session based on one of our new games, Synthetic Truths: Election Edition, an interactive board game about AI in political campaigns. This session is not just about gameplay, but also deep reflection, inviting participants to explore the intersection of digital literacy, AI, and elections.

In this workshop, we guide participants through gameplay in small groups, where they'll navigate the strategic use of AI within the electoral landscape. By participating in workshop, participants will gain a deeper understanding of the tradeoffs and implications of the (ir)responsible use of AI. We hope to spark insightful conversations about ethics and accountability in election campaigns. After the gameplay, participants will compare results, share insights, and foster collaborative learning and critical thinking about the responsible deployment of AI in the electoral process. Don't miss this chance to engage with AI literacy in a dynamic and thought-provoking setting!

Come to this session to strengthen facilitation skills and join the network developing the ‘Collective Power Playbook’. https://collectivepower.net

Divisiveness is rife in our society. Leaders gain power through divide-and-conquer fear-mongering tactics. Our tech-driven culture creates fewer and fewer opportunities for meaningful interaction. At the same time, communities across the world are harnessing the internet to build solidarity. As facilitators, leaders, and convenors, we have an essential role in ensuring meaningful connections that can counter divisiveness.

**This session is about creating the resources, skills and network to perform that role better.**

The Collective Power Playbook is a resource (in progress) for anyone who wants to start organizing or already works on social change efforts. The Playbook provides exercises for you to use when you convene, while the ‘Collective Power’ network growing behind its development will help you strengthen your expertise.

You will find this particularly relevant to empower collective action to:
- Bolster a group to work together during a workshop, meeting or any other convening
- Develop strategies with activists and advocates to attain a more just and fair society
- Work to cocreate transparent, accountable and fair processes in an organization
- Weave a network of practice for peer learning.

This session offers an introductory presentation by members of the first cohort of the Master in Design for Responsible AI by Elisava and IAM, coming from Colombia, Canada, Brazil, India, Poland, Serbia and the UK synthesising key insights from human (and non-human rights), anti-racist, decolonial, feminist, non-Western and queer perspectives that have been part of their learning experience, framed in the context of the ongoing climate emergency.

Afterwards, they will host and facilitate a workshop where participants will break into smaller groups to discuss and use those insights to collectively imagine alternative, inclusive and fair narratives about the futures of AI, in the form of collaborative poetic outputs. Overall, participants will practice the idea of plurality, as defined by Audrey Tang, “technology that recognizes, honors, and empowers cooperation across social and cultural differences”.

This session explores the critical need to operationalize AI Safety and Ethics through Governance within the realm of large-scale, multimodal Generative AI models. To establish a foundation for our discussion, we'll initially question the purpose and incentive for companies to establish governance as a business objective and whether relying solely on regulation is sufficient to mitigate the risks associated with these systems. This inquiry will set the stage for our exploration, emphasizing the significance of incorporating tactical socio-technical measures to complement endeavors in governance. Subsequently, we will delve into implementing ethics and safety for the evolving use cases of generative AI, focusing on two primary approaches: model evaluations and algorithm audits. This section will involve a detailed examination of the various types, characteristics, and limitations inherent in these approaches. In the final segment, we will discuss the practical implications of integrating these interventions, and particularly how their effective application and deployment can guide the responsible release of these models into the external world.

Yet, this potential is markedly hindered by limitations in the quality and diversity of the data used to train these systems. Predominantly, over 90% of the data feeding into popular Large Language Models (LLMs) is in English, leaving a significant gap in digital representation for low-resource languages. This disparity not only limits AI's reach but also perpetuates biases and inequities in technological solutions.
At TAUS, we are committed to addressing these challenges through our Human Language Project (HLP). Our mission is to democratize AI by enhancing data diversity and ensuring fair representation across all languages. This session aims to discuss the challenges in creating a more inclusive AI ecosystem and to share insights from our ongoing efforts to:
- Significantly increase the digital representation of low-resource languages, thereby widening AI’s scope to serve global communities effectively.
- Actively reduce biases in AI datasets to promote more equitable and just AI applications.
- Implement fair compensation practices for our contributors, recognizing their invaluable role in enriching AI with diverse linguistic data.

Have you noticed the number of times you have seen the phrases "Responsible AI", "Responsible Tech", "AI Ethics" lately? There's a lot of attention for these words and there are a lot of people studying them, primarily researchers, academic institutions and occasionally someone from a tech company.

And how many times do we see these concepts actually transition from (digital) paper to practice? Rarely because the thinkers are not always the doers. Or they have no context of the people and communities who are impacted by their thinking...

It's time to change that. Let's build an action list together for Responsible AI/Tech and commit to doing it. What are you waiting for?

In this workshop, bring your three favorite actions for making AI/tech more responsible and inclusive. Together, we will create a toolkit and commit to making it real.

Everyone is welcome to contribute and participate. No advanced degrees or tech experience needed. Instead bring your curiousity, your committment to communities and your common sense.

Toshi Reagon created Songs of the Living as a way to center coming together, signing, and gathering with different creative expressions to find alignment with our living world. The musical experience draws inspiration from Octavia E. Butler’s “Parable of the Sower,” set in the year 2024. The novel prompts contemplation of “Technology of the Living”: the profound idea that we are the predecessors of the machines we engineer, setting the precedent for them.

As we grapple with the implications of AI on our lives, the legacy of The Parables Experience serves as a guiding light for the mission of Songs of the Living. This transformative event highlighted the importance of creating spaces for solidarity, where individuals can come together and ideas can thrive. From these critical dialogues emerges the Songs of the Living experience.

The event will take place at Paradiso at Tolhuistuin.

Misinformation and disinformation have a particular preference for your uncle's Whatsapp inbox. Digital and media literacy are concepts that travel infinitely slower than a picture saying that Coca-Cola contains cocaine.
Identifying misinformation and disinformation online can feel like a hopeless game of Whack-a-Mole, especially when it involves people we care about. False and harmful information is proliferating online at a rate that makes it impossible for even the most efficient fact-checking system to keep up, let alone individuals. While information ecosystems get more complex, with new technologies entering the field, it becomes harder to foster common understandings and constructive debates.

At Global Voice's Civic Media Observatory, we focus on questions of misinformation, disinformation, disruption, and confusion. Using narrative analysis, the Observatory highlights how items of information are connected by narratives and flow within and between networks. We don't aim at excluding ideas, as false as they can be, but acknowledging their existence and understanding how they are comprehended by others. Ultimately, we assess how disruptive and harmful content impacts civil society - and what are the strategies to mitigate it.

This workshop will introduce participants to Observatory methods, focusing on research conducted in Myanmar and Brazil. Discussion topics include: how deep reading and qualitative analysis complement quantitative ap

The Values of Voice: Mapping Community Desires around Voice AI

This workshop welcomes vocal artists, researchers, data scientists, policy makers - or just anyone with an interest in human voice(s) - to join us in reflecting on the value of the human voice within the current state of voice technologies.

What do our voice(s) do? How do they travel and connect us? And where do they go?

Most importantly, how can understanding our values around speaking, singing, shouting, being heard or being silent help us to understand what is at stake when voice(s) become "data" in networks, algorithms and the hands (and ears) of engineers, researchers and data workers?

Are you a vocal artist wondering how your own voice data might be used in training AI voices or music production tools? Or someone doing research involving voice data who wishes there was more ethically sourced data and guidelines within your field? Or a policy maker trying to better understand the landscape of stakeholders around vocal data?

In this workshop we will work on creating a set of vocal values, starting from each person's individual relationship to voice(s), and try to map out how voices travel through different contexts, bodies, and communities, datasets and digital networks.

Together we will reflect on what kinds of pathways for voice exist across AI voice technology and voice data collection, and reflect on what we really want. We will collect and map out all of these wishes, reflections and pathways as a first step towards building a concept of Vocal Values for technology.
