AI Hype is huge right now. We’re still all waiting to see if AI is going to change the world, destroy the world, save us or make us obsolete. All these much-hyped AI tools promising to bring these world-altering changes are all built on huge volumes of data. In many cases, this data is work we’ve created, stolen scraped from the open web. Together we’ll explore current data collection projects that embed consent in their data collection practices, to see if they can’t show us a better path. We’ll also look at where and how we can push back against a future where people who code, write and create are being asked to compete against outputs generated against our own past works.

Jessica Rose is a language obsessed, self taught technologist who is trying hard to dream of a better future. She's founded the Bad Website Club, a free online bootcamp that has supported 50,000 unique learners over 4 years. In her day job she works with the Mozilla Foundation on the Common Voice project, a multilingual donated speech corpus that aims to teach computers the way that real people speak. She always wants to see photos of your pets, to talk about your projects or try to convince people that Birmingham is the best city.
