Abstract:
After providing a brief overview of the collaborative practices used in the PhD and Career Development MOOC, the workshop will focus on a particular system proposed during the MOOC, called DocToDoc. This system was created to foster a sense of community among the participants, and encourage them to support each other by working in groups or pairs to complete the MOOC. The results from the DocToDoc from season 5 will be presented and the participants will then be invited to interact with each other to list the levers for and the obstacles to success. The end goal of the session will be to come up with some improvements to the constitution and functioning groups for and with OERs, within the framework of the MOOC PhD and Career Development.

Conclusion

Presentation
PhDOOC is a non-profit organization that was founded in September 2016 to provide training and support to PhD candidates and holders in their career development. PhDOOC also strives to create a solidary and inclusive community around an innovative virtual and free training service, that is accessible to all: the ‘PhD & Career Development’ MOOC. In alignment with the values of PhDOOC’s pedagogic team, the MOOC community, made of almost 15,000 participants over 5 years, gathers PhD candidates and holders from France and many other countries in Europe and in the rest of the world. The proportion of participants who enroll in the MOOC from outside of France is about 25%.
Digital divides and inclusions
The work done to create and reinforce the MOOC community around the valorisation of higher education degrees and career development is done through the use of innovative online pedagogical tools. Thus, the MOOC participants are encouraged to contribute to enriching the MOOC contents. A lot of room is left for them to get involved in collaborative activities and interact with each other, thus allowing them to co-construct the content of the course, help each other and interact with the pedagogic team through the forums, collaborative documents, social networks and live webinars.
The community is beneficial for people who feel isolated and can thus find a way to get support when and after taking the MOOC. Keeping everything virtual also helps bridging various parts of the world and even removing cultural differences. This also helps the participants to acquire, maintain and share their numerical skills. Innovative practices are shared so the participants can start playing a mediation role between various ecosystems (job descriptions, sectors, countries, etc.).
Innovative practices and knowledge co-construction
During the MOOC, participants are invited to evaluate their experience by answering surveys. The goal of this data collection is to improve the upcoming versions of the MOOC, but also to better understand the participants’ characteristics, as well as their needs in terms of professional/career development, as well as practices and numerical learning.

These surveys generate lots of new information that can be used for the following research purposes:
studying the state and development of digital skills of PhD candidates and holders willing to get ready for their next career step
evaluating how quickly highly qualified participants acquire the skills necessary to get ready for and transition to their next career step
observing the co-creation, exchanges and transfer of new digital practices in the context of sociability, learning and innovation.
Conclusion
The digital transition, which accelerated during the covid19 pandemic, has become a major stake for PhD candidates and holders, as well as the institutions in which they study/work. In addition, Open Science became in force a new regulatory framework that promotes the use of agile and collaborative work and learning approaches, and requires mastering tools and digital work environments. A pioneer in this area, the ‘PhD & Career Development’ MOOC created and run by the PhDOOC association presents an innovative training model that is digital-based and founded on the values of knowledge co-production and sharing, free and open access of contents (the MOOC contents are under a Commons Creative License), and the creation of an inclusive network with participants from all around the world, who can help and support each other.
Proposal for an interactive activity
After a brief overview of the collaborative practices used during the ‘PhD & Career Development’ MOOC, the workshop will focus specifically on the DocToDoc system. DocToDoc was initially created to help foster a sense of community among participants, and allow them to work closely and support each other to complete the MOOC.

DocToDoc is optional (i.e. participants have the choice to join it or not), and allows participants to make autonomous pairs or groups who can support each other to discuss the MOOC content and complete the activities. This thus encourages interactions and fuels the motivation of the participants, while keeping them accountable. Participants willing to enroll in DocToDoc can introduce themselves and join groups on a virtual Padlet wall. They can also take part in discussions in a dedicated thread on the MOOC platform. The pedagogical team also provides them with a calendar and a code of ethics, and all of the DocToDoc materials are provided both in French and in English.

First, the results from the survey conducted among DocToDoc users will be presented (34 answers / 115 DocToDoc participants, season 5).

Finally, an interactive activity will be proposed to the workshop participants. This activity will be entitled “How to improve the formation and functioning of learning groups with open educational resources (OERs): focus on the DocToDoc system within the framework of the ‘PhD & Career Development’ MOOC”. The workshop participants will then have the opportunity to reflect on the DocToDoc survey results, in order to list the levers for success and the obstacles to the constitution of groups and finally to suggest potential improvements.
