Towards better data quality through open source data validation tools
2023-05-19 , Seminar room 1

Data validation requires great effort hence it's crucial to build on already existing initiatives, tools and processes. This talk highlights the potential synergy between the work and tools released by the AlpineBits Alliance and the Open Data Hub, two important players in the local community.

The South Tyrol industries, university and community brought many interesting initiatives to life related to open data, open source and open protocols. The Open Data Hub is a paramount example of the former and this talk aims to bring some actionable ideas to the table that could allow a deeper collaboration and a significantly better outcome for the whole community.

The AlpineBits Alliance is a locally-born initiative to allow better data sharing in the touristic sector through an open standard. In order to ensure the technical interoperability a certification process was established. The certification process is conducted by the AlpineBits Alliance, it is not mandatory and not free since it requires the judgement of an expert, however the tool used by the Auditors was developed and released as open source.

The Open Data Hub implemented an interface which is AlpineBits compatibile and certified and the idea of this talk is to offer also access to the validation tools developed by the AlpineBits Alliance. This would allow companies interested in sharing their data using AlpineBits to verify that their interface is sound and to the Open Data Hub to ingest data of better quality (by asking new partners to first interact with the validation endpoint before actually talking to the main one).
In case of a positive outcome this approach could be extended to further endpoints and data types .
