DESCRIPTION:The workshop addresses the growing significance of generative A
rtificial Intelligence (AI) in the context of Open Educational Resources (
OER) in higher education and adopts an explicitly practice-oriented perspe
ctive. Considering the increasing AI-supported creation of teaching materi
als as well as the use of AI tutors by students\, the question arises as t
o what role OER will play in higher education in the future.\n\nAt the sam
e time\, AI opens new possibilities for the OER practice: It can facilitat
e the creation of OER by removing legal obstacles and help saving time. Fo
r the adaptation of existing OER—such as for translations\, accessibilit
y of materials\, as well as media-related or didactic transformations—th
e use of generative AI can practically be considered a game changer. Conce
pts such as open pedagogy and co-creation with students can also gain new
momentum in the context of AI\, for example as alternative forms of assess
ment.\n\nThe use of OER for training generative AI models is another aspec
t that is discussed in diverse ways: while some instructors are critical o
f having their materials used for AI training—particularly when personal
data such as their own voice or image are involved—open licenses at the
same time provide a legal framework that enables the use of high-quality
OER in AI-supported teaching and learning processes.\n\nThe aim of the wor
kshop is to reflect on the significance of OER in the age of generative AI
and derive thesis about the future role of OER within higher education. W
e will discuss concerns regarding OER in light of AI emerging from higher
education practice - with particular attention paid to legal implications.
