Democratizing AI Through Community Computing: How the AI-Horde Creates Equitable Access to Generative AI
2025-10-01 , Artificial Intelligence

The AI-Horde demonstrates that crowd sourcing computing power for generative AI is viable. Our volunteers provide their resources for overwhelming altruistic reasons, with many believing that generative AI has profound educational and artistic benefit. By providing a platform for those volunteers to offer their compute in a fair and equitable way using our ‘kudos’ system, we have demonstrated that significant ideological will exists to provide these services for free to the public.

The talk will present:
* How the AI-Horde provides viable alternatives to closed generative AI solutions for educational and artistic purposes
* Key challenges encountered (content moderation, preventing commodification, ensuring fairness)
* Technologies employed (distributed computing architecture, open-source models)
* The makeup of our volunteer ecosystem (ideological motivations, global participation)
* Special provisions for educators and public sector adoption
* Attendees will learn how community-driven infrastructure can achieve truly Open Source AI—not just open models, but open access to the compute power needed to use them.
