2025-10-01 –, OSPO, governance and business
In this short talk, Jacek Plucinski, from SnT, University of Luxembourg, will share his insights on setting up an inside university task force, dedicated to help researchers deal with FOSS matters. Is an OSPO needed in a research center at university? How it started and how is it going few years later, and what are the key benefits of such service.
Researchers, not only in the ICT area, heavily rely on software in their scientific projects, not only while publishing their discoveries, but also while transferring the results of their work for the further development or market applications. Along the way, FOSS is appearing across different moments of an R&D life-cycle. Maintaining good understanding on how to use and produce research results combining open-source elements can be a considerable effort, but if done right it will bring concrete benefits for researchers and also society and end-users alike. This presentation will walk you throughout the journey of identifying the need for more consolidated approach, through designing the FOSS policy and related processes, to setting up an operational task force dedicated to support the researchers and other entities on the FOSS related matters. Common pitfalls, good practices and practical hints of setting up such academic OSPO will be shared.
