DESCRIPTION:LuCy is a 3-year odyssey to bring a new security solution clos
er to the R&E community in Luxembourg. The open-source project is integrat
ed into an existing IT infrastructure - but wait\, why not open it to our
Luxembourgish R&E community and that at a low cost! After some reflection
it became clear that with a bit of effort the security tools can also be u
sed by the community!\n\nThis presentation will be the conclusion on the L
uCySe4RE project\, presenting the overall highs and lows of the project fr
om a technical\, awareness as well as from the human perspective.\n\nAs a
conclusion\, focus will be put on new challenges that emerged after the mo
ve from prototype to a fully-fledged service\, as well as explain new risk
s that we did not identify before.\n\nIn this presentation we will share o
ur lessons-learned from our journey from a prototype to a tool in producti
on and hopefully reach others to start their journey with implementing and
promoting open-source projects in their community in future!

DESCRIPTION:Who remembers 2000? The era of ICQ and weird modem sounds\, wh
ere ISDN was still luxury. Back in 2000\, research in IT was an emerging t
opic and was heavily discussed if there is a future for IT. Plenty of tech
nologies\, considered unnecessary or science fiction\, are becoming popula
r today\, but found their roots at that time\, such as AI or quantum resea
rch. It was also in 2000 that the national research and education network
Restena has taken on its own legal form\, thus confirming significance an
d central role of both the network for research and education it brought t
o life 10 years before — when Restena was still at the project stage - a
nd the Internet it brought to Luxembourg in 1992.\nSo 26 years ago\, Reste
na\, the NREN for Luxembourg started with a mindset of promoting innovativ
e ideas\, cutting edge technology and always oriented Open-Source for the
the research and education sector. With its specific role as the research
network it was quite obvious that new and promising technologies should be
promoted for the larger community on national and international level. \n
Even nowadays\, deeply anchored in its roots\, Restena mostly operates Ope
n-source solutions for covering the needs of the research and education se
ctor\, but also contributes actively in the development of new open-source
solutions. \nThis presentation will highlight the impact of using open-so
urce in a commercially shaped world and its users on one side and also dis
cuss its effects on data sovereignty and infrastructure resilience (in the
  R&E?)
