Currently, the ecosystem is besieged by "Openwashing", that is global hyperscalers claiming Open Source status while releasing only non-deterministic model weights, deliberately obscuring the underlying training data and algorithmic recipes required for true scientific reproducibility and security auditing.
This session explores the high-stakes intersection of traditional community values, European digital sovereignty, and emerging operational AI realities. We will analyze the fundamentally dual nature of neural network weights, demonstrating precisely why traditional software licenses fail to capture the complexities of machine learning. Attendees will be guided through a critical, comparative evaluation of the latest transparency frameworks, including the Open Source Initiative’s OSAID v1.0, the Linux Foundation’s Model Openness Framework (MOF), and Stanford’s Foundation Model Transparency Index (FMTI).
