DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, I`ll explore why public institutions (from gove
rnments to universities and public broadcasters) must rethink how they com
municate with the public in light of recent digital sovereignty debates. W
hile many are already shifting toward open-source software\, their relianc
e on commercial platforms for public communication remains unchallenged. D
ependence on platforms like Instagram\, X\, or TikTok exposes institutions
to risks\, from data exploitation and algorithmic bias to compliance issu
es with EU regulations like the GDPR and DSA. More importantly\, this stat
us quo undermines digital sovereignty and democratic values by prioritizin
g corporate interests over public access to information.\nBut change is po
ssible and it starts with one simple principle. \n\nThe Plus1 approach\, a
practical and actionable strategy that encourages public institutions to
commit to at least one open\, federated\, or community-driven platform alo
ngside commercial ones. This isn’t just about technology\; it’s about
leading by example and demonstrating that alternatives exist. Open-source
communication platforms can foster transparency\, interoperability\, and l
ong-term accessibility while reducing dependencies on exploitative structu
res.\n\nBy the end of this talk\, you’ll understand how small\, intentio
nal steps\, like adopting the Plus1 principle can help public institutions
take back control of their digital communication. You’ll leave with a c
lear vision of how to advocate for change in your own context and inspire
others to join the movement toward a more open\, sovereign\, and democrati
 c digital public sphere.
