DESCRIPTION:In many aspects\, the European Commission’s OS Strategy is a
n Open Source advocate’s wet dream. It finally recognizes our work of th
e past decades as the fundament for a sovereign Europe\, and Open Source a
s a major strategic lever to achieve digital sovereignty.\nStill\, both CA
DA and the OS strategy leave a lot to be desired. \nSo there is a lot to d
o for the Open Source ecosystem in the next months\, while the Package mak
es its way through the European institutions. We need to up our game massi
vely when it comes to lobbyism. We need to move from amateur league to maj
 or league.\nBut it’s not only about lobbyism.\nWith the Tech Package\, t
he European Commission is asking for the solutions required to break away
from dependencies on authoritarian countries.\nNow we have to live up to t
he promise of Open Source. But let’s get this straight: Most of our solu
tions are not mature. And besides the lack of maturity\, our offerings lac
k key parts required to build a sovereign stack\, namely powerful AI model
s\, and mobile operating systems.\nTaking all of this into account\, my se
cond plea is to start mapping out concretely what needs to be done from ou
r side to become able to deliver.\nNo single company can manage this on th
eir own. We need to talk about consortia\, mergers\, interoperability and
a joint action plan.\nFunding lobbyists means that we have 11 players on t
he lawn\, not only one. \nBeing able to deliver means we have a ball that
 actually flies – and scores.
