We believe that improvements to the current academic publishing system are overdue. Commercial publishing is dominant and so is a strong focus on rewarding novelty barring the much needed work in replication research. Community-based publishing has been discussed as one of the most promising ways forward to break the dominance of commercial publishing. We present Replication Research (R2) as an example of a community journal. We share the process of working with and for the community, and how open documentation and inclusive academic exchange can help align the incentive structure with our scientific ideals.
