Creating your own MapComplete theme
08-21, 14:30–15:30 (Europe/Rome), Workshops and Loop-Cinema - Room 103

In this workshop, you'll learn the basics of setting up your own mapcomplete theme.

After a short introduction, explanation of some common pitfalls and a technical explanation, you're invited to open up your laptop (or tablet) and can try it out yourself while I'm around to answer some questions.

If you ever wondered how you can quickly create an OSM-editor geared towards a specific topic, this workshop is for you.

First, a small introduction to what a good theme is will be given; together with some common requests and best practices. Afterwards, the technicalities of getting started are explained. The idea is to have a hands-on workshop, where one can give it a try immediately.

Workshop requirements

You need:

  • An OSM-account
  • Good knowledge of OSM-internals (tagging scheme, nodes vs ways vs relations)
  • Bring your laptop (or tablet if no laptop is available)
  • You will have to edit a .json-file

After studying informatics at Ghent University, Pieter was drawn into OpenStreetMap and is now working for a small company providing mobilityplanning and routeplanning services. As freelancer, he developed MapComplete, which aims to be an easy-to-use and topical map viewer and editor. You might find him climbing or cycling somewhere, even though he'll often pause to add something to OSM.
