State of OpenHistoricalMap: mapping the world's history, openly
Ruben Lopez Mendoza, Minh Nguyễn

It has been more than a decade since OpenHistoricalMap was last presented at State of the Map. In that time, the project has grown into a major platform for mapping the history of the world: cities as they evolve, infrastructure that no longer exists, changing landscapes, shifting borders, and many other layers of time. We are collecting it together in one place, as open data, in a spirit of cooperation.

In this talk we want to share where OpenHistoricalMap is today: what has been mapped so far, how people contribute, the tools that make historical mapping possible, and the projects that are building on top of OpenHistoricalMap data. We will go through real examples of historical mapping happening around the world, the workflows mappers are using and showcases, and the changes we made to the editors and tooling so they work for OHM and not only OSM.

We close with where the project is going next, how new contributors can get involved, and how the wider OSM community can support historical mapping going forward.
