The Federal Agency for Cartography and Geodesy (BKG) has a long history on the usage of OpenStreetMap data and plans to further set this data as a reliable source for geospatial products published by governmental bodies. The aim of the talk is to give an overview how NMCAs and federal institutions in Germany use the geospatial data collected and publicized by mappers around the globe and how we want to strengthen the interaction between public administration and the OSM community.
We submit this talk as we would like to give an overview on the usage of OpenStreetMap data by NMCAs on the example of the BKG. The BKG, based in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, is a National Mapping Agency with the task of preparing, updating and provisioning of geodetic-, location-, and spatial based data products. We use OSM data as a reliable source for years and want to cement this by further updating existing products like TopPlusOpen, which is based on a synergy of official data and OSM data. We also reinforce this position by participating in the annual FOSSGIS conference, which is organized by FOSSGIS e.V., the local OSMF chapter in Germany.
Also, we would like to explain how we support and contribute to open source software development under the guidelines of further enhancing the usage of OSM data. One example of our contribution of a software product in the OSM world is by supporting the development of a tool for assessing the quality of OSM data in collaboration with HeiGIT, the ohsome quality analysis integrated in the ohsome dashboard. One of the major challenges for NMCAs is the quality of the obtained data, as users lay an even higher emphasis on the temporal, spatial and numerical quality on data published by government agencies. With the support of ohsome dashboard we want to give an indicator for the reliability of the data collected in certain regions.
Lastly, we also want to give an overview in which extent other public bodies use OSM data for their everyday tasks in different sectors. For example, public institutions largely use OpenRouteService (ORS) by HeiGIT to meet their routing service needs without relying on private providers. We host our own instance of this ORS and also develop adjacent products like RoutingPlus, which is an open source solution specifically developed for public bodies.

The German Federal Agency for Cartography and Geodesy (BKG) set their task to promote the usage of open source sotware and open data products. This also includes the usage of OpenStreetMap data as a part of federal geodata products. Furthermore, the BKG publishes data products under open data licenses with ODbL conformity.
I work in a coordinative function at the BKG and would like to talk about the growing role of OpenStreetMap for national mapping and cadastral agencies (NMCAs). Furthermore I would like to throw the spotlight on a national OSM chapter which promotes the preservation of OSM data.
