Complementing OSM Cycling Data through Official Datasets
2025-11-15 , Way

We analysed 30 official cycling infrastructure datasets across the EU, standardised them, and compared them with OSM data. Missing segments were extracted automatically and then saved as geospatial files per area of analysis. These files will be shared with the community. The work is ongoing, more datasets to be added.

This work focuses on enhancing OpenStreetMap (OSM) cycling infrastructure data using official datasets. We analysed 13 national and 17 regional or city-level datasets across the EU. To ensure comparability, all datasets were transformed into a standardised format. We then conducted a comparison with OSM data to identify infrastructure segments present in the official datasets but missing from OSM. Conversely, we also examined segments present in OSM but absent from the official datasets, as an indicator of potential false positives in OSM.

The process is automated, and the resulting outputs are provided as GeoPackage (GPKG) files. These are organised by area and can also be filtered by standardised cycling infrastructure type. These files highlight the gaps in OSM and can be used directly for editing or improving the existing OSM cycling network.

Our goal is to share these geospatial outputs with the broader OSM community. The work is in progress, so more datasets will be added.
