OpenStreetMap is a powerful foundation for outdoor navigation. Using examples from Mapy.com, specialized in hiking and cycling maps. This session explores outdoor data quality, tagging practices, and gaps across Europe. Learn how OSM supports outdoor enthusiasts today, and where the community can contribute to improve tomorrow’s adventures.
Outdoor adventures, from hiking in the mountains to cycling long-distance routes, depend on high-quality map data. OpenStreetMap has become a key global source for outdoor mapping, and Mapy.com is one of the projects that builds on it, providing detailed hiking and cycling maps for millions of users.
This session will show, through concrete examples from Mapy.com, how OSM data is applied to outdoor navigation—covering trails, cycle routes, elevation details, and outdoor-specific points of interest such as shelters, springs, and viewpoints. We will discuss what works well in OSM today and highlight best practices for outdoor tagging.
At the same time, we will address challenges: countries or regions where data coverage is incomplete, inconsistent tagging across borders, and missing details that limit outdoor usability. These examples will illustrate how contributors and communities can focus efforts to close gaps and improve OSM for outdoor purposes.
Participants will leave with practical insights into how OSM can be used effectively for outdoor activities, and how projects like Mapy.com demonstrate its potential when combined with community contributions.
