DESCRIPTION:In recent decades\, scholars in Jewish studies have devoted the
mselves to crafting critical editions of various compositions within Sage
literature\, driven by the premise that an "accurate book" serves as the f
undamental bedrock for all textual inquiries. Within the burgeoning field
of digital humanities\, aimed at leveraging programming tools for humanist
ic research\, the potential to incorporate scholarly-digital editions of b
oth ancient and contemporary texts has emerged. At the 18th World Congress
of Jewish Studies in the summer of 2015\, I unveiled a scholarly-digital
edition of the Jerusalem Rosh Hashanah Talmud tractate available at www.ye
rushalmi-criticaledition.com. This edition encompasses textual sections\,
afrat\, parallels to sage literature\, and a comprehensive commentary on t
he entire treatise based on extensive research (www.yerushalmi-criticaledi
tion.com).\n\nA key advantage of a scholarly-digital edition lies in its c
apacity to augment the commentary section with a digital compendium featur
ing images\, videos\, sound clips\, and maps (Google Maps link). The integ
ration of a digital map in the scholarly-digital edition for Rosh Hashanah
Jerusalemites as a representation of knowledge poses multifaceted challen
ges. The process of map preparation prompts inquiries into site identifica
tions\, dual identifications of the same site\, differentiation between ta
ngible and conceptual sites\, determining the optimal number of layers on
the map\, and more. On the part of students engaging with this edition\, q
uestions arise regarding the map's utility in identifying mentioned sites
and comprehending the spatial context within which the sages operated duri
ng the Talmudic period.\n\nIn this presentation\, I aim to briefly outline
the challenges encountered by the map's editor and present initial findin
gs from an ongoing study I am conducting on how students of oral Torah\, b
oth as learners and educators\, utilize the map within this edition.
