At Wagtail Space NL 2022, We launched Wagtail Nest. It is a community-driven initiative to give third-party Wagtail packages a safe and sustainable home. Many great add-ons risk becoming unmaintained when their original authors step away. Wagtail Nest provides continuity: shared maintenance, regular releases, and a clear path for packages to stay alive and useful.

In this talk I’ll share:

  • The origin story of Wagtail Nest (and why we needed it).
  • How the platform works today and what packages already live there.
  • Lessons learned from community-led maintenance.
  • What’s next: growing the ecosystem together, and how you can get involved.

Participants will leave with a clear picture of how Wagtail Nest makes the ecosystem stronger, how they can move their packages into the Nest, and how they can contribute to keeping the Wagtail community vibrant.

I’m a Python developer at Four Digits in the Netherlands, a Wagtail Core Team member, Security Team member, Google Summer of Code mentor, and organizer of Wagtail Space NL.

I work daily with Python, Django, and Wagtail, and occasionally publish packages to PyPI to scratch my own itch. My work often involves consultancy and mentoring, helping teams get the most out of their projects.

I enjoy creating practical tools. Drawing on my background in graphic design to approach problems with a creative mindset. Connecting the dots between challenges and possibilities gives me energy, especially when the result is a tool that makes life easier for others.

Outside of work, I live with my partner Lisette and our six-year-old son. We enjoy camping together, and in my spare time I like rowing, running, and cycling.
