Wikidata at Texas A&M University Libraries: Enhancing Discovery for Dissertations
10-30, 16:00–16:25 (UTC), Room 2

This presentation will provide an overview of how a team of librarians at Texas A&M University used OpenRefine to upload information to Wikidata for a selected sample of mechanical engineering students, their doctoral dissertations and faculty advisors as part of the PCC Wikidata Pilot initiative. The data came from our institutional repository as well as our VIVO database of faculty member profiles. It will also describe our ongoing work to enhance the items that were created both manually and with the help of Mix’n’Match. Finally, it will cover issues encountered and next steps, as well as possible implications that Wikidata may have for some of our more traditional processes to manage personal and organizational entities in our catalog.

What will the participants take away from this session?

This presentation would primarily benefit libraries that would like to get started experimenting with linked data in order to demonstrate its value but that don't have lot of resources (including technical expertise) to devote to it. There has been a movement toward linked data in the GLAM world, but until recently, it has been more challenging for some libraries to get involved without support from their IT departments or other stakeholders. This presentation would also demonstrate how libraries may re-use data that is already stored in repositories in a semi-automated way without having to input everything from scratch.
