DESCRIPTION:Digital Humanities projects about racialised chattel slavery an
d the Transatlantic Slave Trade often make claims of being "decolonial" an
d "reparative" while modelling data about enslaved people that continues t
o replicate and encode the dehumanisation and commodification of enslaved
persons\, while excluding and restricting Afrodescendents from contributin
g to and accessing these projects\, their significant resources and potent
ial benefits. \n\nThis talk will expand on Black digital practice (identif
ied by Jessica Marie Johnson in her important paper "MarkUp Bodies") in th
e Wikimedia communities and introduce the possibilities of 'WikiProject Ch
attel Enslavement and Freedom' that aims to:\n• improve how data about e
nslaved people\, self-liberated people\, and the histories of racialised c
hattel slavery is modelled and structured\n• address the knowledge debt
around the knowledge production and intellectual histories of enslaved per
sons and their communities \n• support the development of ethical approa
ches to data modelling about enslaved persons\, enslavement and freedom on
