Wikidata and Abstract Wikipedia: the Now and the Future.
2025-11-01 , One and Only

Abstract Wikipedia aims to provide global, multilingual access to knowledge by separating content from language, allowing it to be expressed in any natural language. Wikidata lies at the very core of this vision. In this talk, we will show how Wikidata already works with Wikifunctions, powering functions that generate plain text and HTML outputs, and will look ahead to how abstract content may be represented and the role Wikidata will play in this.

Abstract Wikipedia is a new Wikimedia project designed to allow knowledge to be written once and rendered in any natural language. At the center of this effort stands Wikidata, whose structured knowledge makes it possible to separate content from its linguistic expression.

This presentation will outline the crucial role that Wikidata plays in the journey toward Abstract Wikipedia. We will look at how Wikidata entities are currently used in Wikifunctions, enabling functions to use and combine data in powerful ways, and even produce outputs that can already be part of Wikipedia and Wiktionary pages.

Looking to the future, one of the key questions for Abstract Wikipedia is how to best represent and store abstract content. The community has explored different options, and important decisions are emerging that will shape the path forward. In this talk, we will share the current thinking, discuss how Wikidata will continue to play a central role in this process, and highlight what these developments mean for the vision of a truly multilingual Wikipedia.
