Ever wished your AI could do more than just answer a question?
What if you could teach it how to think, decide, and verify?

This workshop introduces one of the newest and most powerful AI architectures: graph-based reasoning systems, where AI agents follow structured decision graphs to retrieve information, reason step by step, and produce reliable, evidence-based answers.

We begin from first principles, explaining how large language models work and why they cannot be trusted on their own. You will then build a complete RAG pipeline that connects an open-source LLM to real documents, enabling it to retrieve evidence and generate fact-grounded answers instead of confident guesses.

From there, we move beyond linear pipelines.

You will transform your RAG system into a graph-based AI agent: an autonomous assistant whose reasoning is explicit, structured, and controllable. Using a reasoning graph, the AI learns when to retrieve information, how to combine multiple sources, when to verify results, and when to stop. Instead of one-shot responses, your system follows a clear decision flow that mirrors human problem-solving.

By the end of the workshop, you will have built a complete, open-source AI assistant that can read documents, retrieve knowledge, reason through a graph, and answer with evidence.
Not a simple chatbot.
A truly intelligent AI agent that follows a path of thought.

                <description>## What you will learn:

- **Master the Fundamentals** : Learn how Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) and AI agents work together to combine retrieval, reasoning, and generation into accurate, context-aware responses.

- **Build Your Own AI Agent System**: Follow a step-by-step process to build the full pipeline from document ingestion, chunking, embeddings, retrieval, to LLM integration, and then upgrade it into a graph-based agent that knows when to retrieve, what to search, and how to produce grounded answers.

- **Gain Hands-On Experience**: Work through practical exercises and real-world examples that show how a graph-based agent can explore different type of documents, gather evidence, verify key points, and answer in a reliable way.

- **Ensure Data Security**: Learn how to deploy open-source AI systems with a strong focus on data privacy, secure processing, and responsible use of sensitive information.

- **Bonus: Evaluation &amp; Reliability**: Discover how to test and measure your AI system to ensure it is using the right sources, avoiding hallucinations, and producing reliable, trustworthy answers.

## Who Should Join

This workshop is designed for anyone familiar with Python who wants to go deeper into how the most robust and modern AI systems are built. Perfect for:
 &#128187; Developers
&#128202;Data Scientists
&#128736;&#65039;Engineers
&#129302;Curious AI Enthusiasts
Some experience with Python programming is required. You don&#8217;t need any background in machine learning or artificial intelligence. We&#8217;ll build everything together, step by step.

## What to Bring

Just bring your laptop and a stable internet connection (Wi-Fi). We&#8217;ll take care of the rest.

## Why This Matters

Most LLMs are impressive&#8230; but also a little dangerous. They often sound confident even when they are wrong.
In this workshop, you will build an AI system where RAG provides knowledge, AI agents add judgment and graph-based reasoning allows your AI to search, verify, and think (in the right way) before it answers.

<description>Large Language Models enable powerful capabilities, but production-grade AI agents require more than prompt engineering. In enterprise environments, prompt chaining often leads to non-deterministic behavior, limited observability, and systems that are difficult to test and control.

This workshop introduces a planning-driven approach to agent design using Embabel, an open-source framework created by Rod Johnson and built on Spring AI. Instead of orchestrating behavior through prompts, Embabel applies Goal-Oriented Action Planning (GOAP), where agents are composed of strongly typed actions, goals, and domain models.

Participants will build a working agent inside a Spring Framework application, learning how to integrate LLMs as controlled components within a deterministic planning system. The resulting agents are explainable, testable, and capable of dynamic replanning when conditions change or failures occur.

By the end of the workshop, attendees will understand how to move from fragile prompt-based systems to robust, production-ready agent architectures without introducing a new tech stack or sacrificing architectural control.

## Adressaten:
Klassische Applikationsentwickler, Architekten und technologie-affine Product-Owner, welche m&#246;gliche &quot;real-world&quot; Anwendungsf&#228;lle f&#252;r AI kennenlernen m&#246;chten.

<description>Der Workshop gliedert sich in vier inhaltliche Bl&#246;cke:

**Block 1 &#8212; Agentic Coding &amp; MCP (Vormittag)**

**Block 2 &#8212; Spec first: Warum Kontext entscheidet**

Kein spezifischer Stack vorausgesetzt.

Zielgruppe: Developers, Engineers, Architects und Tech Leads.

<description>Nicht jedes LLM-Feature muss in der Cloud laufen.

- **Modelle:** Qwen, Llama, Phi, Gemma, Mistral liefern in 3B&#8211;14B Parametern erstaunliche Qualit&#228;t
- **Runtimes:** Ollama (einfach), llama.cpp (flexibel), MLX (optimal f&#252;r Apple Silicon), vLLM (Production)

**Was bauen wir?**
- Chat-Modell f&#252;r Konversation
- Embeddings-Modell f&#252;r Vektorsuche und RAG
- Whisper.cpp f&#252;r Echtzeit-Transkription
- Vision-Modell f&#252;r Bildverarbeitung
- Python-Backend mit intelligentem Routing (lokal f&#252;r private Daten, Cloud f&#252;r komplexe Aufgaben)

**Reality-Check**

- **&#220;berraschend gut lokal:** Klassifikation, Extraktion, einfache Zusammenfassungen, Code-Completion
- **Cloud gewinnt klar:** Komplexes Reasoning, lange Kontexte, kreatives Schreiben
- **Diskussion:** Wie verkauft man lokale AI intern?

<description>AI coding tools can generate implementations, tests, and refactorings within minutes. The harder question is whether those changes are correct, understandable, appropriately structured, and safe to keep.

Generated code can compile, pass its tests, and still be wrong. It may rely on an unsupported API, silently change behaviour during a refactoring, copy a legacy workaround as if it were the preferred design, omit important failure or authorization paths, or produce an impressive test suite that protects implementation details instead of the behaviour that matters.

This hands-on workshop turns Clean Code judgement into a practical AI-assisted development workflow. Participants work with a provided application, inspect real generated diffs, improve tests, refactor code in small controlled steps, make deliberate domain and architecture decisions, and convert repeated review findings into reusable repository guardrails.

The focus is on the quality of an individual AI-assisted change. Participants begin with an unguided agent implementation and progressively make it safer, clearer, better tested, and more consistent with the intended direction of the codebase. Clean Code practices, code smells, test design, domain modelling, and architecture patterns are used as practical decision tools rather than as abstract catalogues.

The workshop is deliberately tool-agnostic. Participants may use Codex, Claude Code, Cursor, GitHub Copilot coding agents, or equivalent repository-level tools. The focus is not on collecting prompts or maximizing the number of agents. The focus is on making engineering judgement explicit, verifiable, and reusable so that AI assistance improves the codebase instead of accelerating technical debt.</description>

Many teams have started using AI, but few have seen a significant impact on their overall delivery value. Why? Because individual productivity tools don&apos;t automatically translate into team effectiveness. In this hands-on workshop, we move beyond &quot;Vibe Coding&quot; and basic prompts. We explore how to integrate AI into the entire Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) to eliminate bottlenecks, shorten feedback loops, and ensure that AI handles the grunt work while the team retains control over domain logic and quality.

<description>In this workshop, we address the &quot;AI Effectiveness Gap&quot;&#8212;the space between adopting AI tools and achieving real business value. Participants will learn a role-based methodology to coordinate AI usage across the team, ensuring that AI-generated output aligns with architectural standards and user needs.

**Key modules include:**

- Mastering Context Engineering: How to create and coordinate shared context across the SDLC to get consistent, high-quality results.
- AI-Enhanced Workflow: Practical strategies for integrating AI into requirements, architecture, testing, and documentation.
- Managing Tech Debt: How to use AI to reduce existing debt instead of generating new complexity.
- Human-in-the-Loop Excellence: Establishing validation patterns where domain expertise remains the ultimate guardrail.

**Practical takeaways:**

- A roadmap for transitioning from ad-hoc AI usage to a structured, team-based AI strategy.
- Frameworks for avoiding &quot;FOMO&quot; by building a model-agnostic methodology.

AI is being compared to major technological innovations of the past few centuries and its impact is being felt by the entire world. Focusing on us, the software developers, we are already seeing tremendous benefits, yet we&apos;re experiencing the effects of non-determinism and hallucinations. As technical people we see this somewhat differently than the non-technical folks. Yet, so much of what we do is greatly directed by those in charge, but not necessarily sufficiently informed.

One agent is a demo. A fleet of them is an infrastructure problem, and the one most organisations are about to walk into without a plan. This workshop is about the architecture that makes agents safe to operate at scale, built entirely on open-source components you can run on-prem or on any cloud. No vendor lock-in.

We&apos;ll spend the day on the patterns and trade-offs that decide whether agents become a strategic capability or a compliance liability: the Agent Mesh: a gateway, a registry, and a runtime that do for agent fleets what Istio and Kubernetes did for microservices. Security, observability, and agent identity are not bolted on at the end; they sit at the center of the architecture.

The format is concept-first with short, guided exercises to make the ideas concrete. Engineers will get their hands dirty; architects and decision-makers can follow the through-line without writing a line of code.

<description>This is a working session for people who already suspect that &quot;just ship the agent&quot; won&apos;t survive contact with production. We treat agents as a distributed-systems problem first and a model problem second, and we build up the architecture in the same order you&apos;d actually have to defend it: what the thing is, where it lives, how it&apos;s secured, and how you prove it behaved. Every pattern shown is backed by an open-source component you can run yourself; the goal is for you to leave with an architecture you could whiteboard for your own team on Monday.

---

**By the end of the day you will be able to&#8230;**

- Explain where complexity lives in a modern agent system, and what scales poorly
- Architect an Agent Mesh: gateway, registry, runtime, and what each one solves
- Design agent IAM with per-agent identity, mTLS, and policy at the traffic layer
- Apply guardrails and observability strategies that surface regressions early
- Evaluate open-source components against the lock-in risk of managed alternatives
- Make a defensible build-vs-adopt case to your own organisation

---

The day is structured in four blocks, each pairing a concept session with a short, optional exercise:

1. **What a Production Agent Actually Is**: an LLM in a loop calling tools, and the harness around it. We pin down the minimum viable architecture, then expose the gaps a single-agent prototype hides: context handling, tool governance, failure modes. The shortlist of problems the rest of the day exists to solve.
2. **The Agent Mesh: Gateway, Registry, Runtime**: the architectural centrepiece. The parallel to the service mesh, the three pillars, and why agent fleets need them. Walkthrough of the open-source reference stack: `agentgateway` (Linux Foundation) and `kagent` (CNCF Sandbox). What lives where, and which problems each pillar owns.
3. **Security &amp; Identity for Agent Fleets**: agent IAM as a first-class concern. Per-agent identity instead of shared API keys, mTLS between components, scoped credentials, central quotas, prompt-injection defence, tool-call policy. Guardrails as gateway middleware rather than per-feature code.
4. **Observability, Evaluation &amp; Reliability**: OTel traces across prompts, tool calls, and agent hops. Evaluation gates in CI to catch regressions before they ship. Cost control at the gateway. How to prove what an agent did, with which model, on whose behalf; the question regulators and incident reviews both ask.

Multi-agent patterns (planning, sub-agents, orchestrator/worker) and the Google ADK framework appear throughout the day as the concrete examples for the exercises, not as a block of their own. The same goes for **context engineering**, the discipline that replaced prompt engineering, integrated into Block 1 and revisited where it matters, rather than treated as a standalone topic.

---

**Key Topics**

- The agent harness and the minimum architecture for production
- The Agent Mesh: gateway, registry, runtime, portable across clouds
- Agent IAM: per-agent identity, mTLS, scoped credentials, no shared API keys
- Guardrails: input/output validation, tool-call policy, prompt-injection defence
- Observability: OTel traces across prompts, tool calls, and agent hops
- Reliability: evaluation in CI, regression gates, central cost and quota control
- Context engineering, applied throughout, not relegated to a single block
- Build-vs-adopt: open-source mesh components against managed-platform lock-in

---

**Who Should Attend**

- Architects and platform leads evaluating how to host agents safely
- Security, SRE, and compliance teams responsible for AI workloads
- Engineers building LLM-powered systems beyond the prototype
- Technical decision-makers weighing build, adopt, and lock-in trade-offs

---

**Prerequisites**

- A working understanding of LLMs and tool calling (helpful, not required)
- No prior agent-framework experience needed

---

**Stack you&apos;ll see:** Google ADK, MCP, `agentgateway`, `kagent`, Guardrails AI.
All open source. Runs on-prem, on any cloud you happen to have a cluster on.
