On our current trajectory, the future of UX design will look much like the present, only worse. The gold rush mentality towards UX design as a “career”, combined with Gresham’s Law (“bad money drives out good”) applied to design, combined with automation from software platforms means we are increasing the pace at which bad designs proliferate. UX benchmarks such as e-commerce usability, overall website accessibility, and SUS changes over time have stagnated or regressed for the past several years.
To prevent this apocalyptic future we must: collaborate less often. Say "no" more often. Do less (pointless) user research. And take professionalism seriously.
Joshua is a current product manager and once-and-future UX designer with over two decades of experience in both large corporations and small agencies. He has worked in several industries including retail, paints & coatings, banking, and insurance.
