Adopting Bitcoin 2025

From 0 to 21 restaurants: Nine Months of Bitcoin Adoption in Sofia, Bulgaria

Since our first attempt to orange-pill a restaurant back in 2016, we’ve come a long way before seeing circular economies emerge around the world. For a while, we fell asleep — until the local community woke us up. We found ourselves in a place where paying with Bitcoin was becoming a thing. So, we jumped on the train by wrapping our core services for restaurants with a Bitcoin layer. That’s when we realized — we had a Trojan Horse. And off we went.

The EU can be a tough game for Bitcoin adoption—strict regulations, talk of CBDCs, easy access to banks, and widespread credit card use leave merchants with little incentive to look at Bitcoin. At Ordermoon, we asked: why not try anyway? Nine months after receiving 3M sats grant from Bitcoin Beach, we were at number 21. We’ve run satsback campaigns for users, offered bonus sats to merchants, and even launched an app with a self-custodial Lightning wallet. We tracked the flow of sats, tested user behavior, and experimented with strategies to overcome the “HODL pandemic.”

The result? From 3M sats in grants to 15M sats now circulating, we’ve proven that grassroots Bitcoin adoption is possible—even in the EU.
