The phrase "of the people, by the people, for the people" is a well-known quote from Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg Address. It encapsulates the idea of a government that is fundamentally rooted in and derives its power from the citizens it governs. What if the governing is managed or even replaced by an open, trustless, transparent and immutable framework that by its design is governed by the individual?
The phrase "Can society adopt true individual sovereignty?" is asking whether people can truly be in charge of their own lives while still living together in a community. Individual sovereignty means each person has the freedom to make their own choices, control their own actions, and live according to their own beliefs without someone else—like a government or group—forcing them to do things they don’t want to.
Imagine if you got to decide everything about your day, like what to eat, what to learn, or how to spend your time, without anyone else telling you what to do. The question is whether a whole society can work this way, where everyone has that kind of freedom, but still gets along and keeps things fair and safe for everyone.
This idea is tricky because living in a society means people have to follow some shared rules to avoid chaos. It’s like asking if a group of friends can all choose their own games to play but still have fun together without fighting.
What if those shared rules are enabled by open decentralized protocols like Bitcoin and Nostr? We would not have to trust each other but can rely on our our society being built on a trustless, open and transparent framework?
