LightningPiggy is a Bitcoin-enabled electronic piggy bank for children. It receives payments via the Lightning Network and displays the balance in satoshis, making sound money the standard for young savers.
Our vision is to make sats the savings’ standard for every child, while creating an educational platform to inspire future generations, not only to save in satoshis, but also to learn to code and build in a free and open source way.
Every day, around 400,000 children are born. Today, nearly 30% of the world’s population - about 2.4 billion people - is under the age of 15. Most of these children have limited access to financial tools or are saving in fiat currencies that lose value over time. A child who received fiat from the tooth fairy seven years ago has already lost over 98% of its value compared to Bitcoin.
We’ve been conditioned to save, work, and plan in fiat terms. It’s time to fix that paradigm.
LightningPiggy is the world’s first Lightning-enabled piggy bank. It runs on a low-cost single-board computer with a built-in display, connected to the internet via Wi-Fi. A QR code is displayed on the device, allowing anyone to instantly send bitcoin to the child’s wallet from anywhere in the world. The balance is updated live in satoshis, along with the latest transaction and optional messages of encouragement.
The piggy bank’s body can be made from recycled materials (like cardboard), or custom-built using an expanding library of 3D-printable enclosures. The open-source nature of the project supports community engagement through workshops, kits, and group builds; ideal for classrooms, hackspaces, and local meet-ups.
With LightningPiggy 2.0, we’ve reimagined both the hardware and software. At its heart is MicroPythonOS, a lightweight operating system purpose-built by our lead developer for bitcoin and nostr enabled small devices. This major upgrade dramatically improves onboarding and unlocks new possibilities for educational, Bitcoin-native tools designed for kids and makers alike.
