This session will present the research done by Beam Reports - a Sudanese media platform specialized in verification of news and investigative journalism - to analyze the trends of misinformation and disinformation within the most popular social media sites for Sudanese people, along with some of the actors associated with these activities. The research also aims to display some of the techniques used by the most influential actors with the intention of spreading false information or manipulation of public opinion.

سيشرع المتحدّث في تقديم البحث والتحليل الذي أُجري حول اتجاهات المعلومات المضللة والمعلومات الخاطئة في السودان، والجهات الفاعلة أو الشبكات الأكثر نفوذًا التي تنشر هذا النوع من المعلومات، والتقنيات المستخدمة للتلاعب بالمحتوى عبر الإنترنت على منصات التواصل الاجتماعي الأكثر استخدامًا في السودان. كما سيعرض بعض الأمثلة على محاولات التلاعب بالرأي العام، وكيفية ارتباطها ببعض الأحداث السياسية الجارية في السودان.
في بقيّة الجلسة، سيتم عرض بعض الدروس المستفادة والتوصيات لمكافحة المعلومات المضللة/الخاطئة على وسائل التواصل الاجتماعي السودانية، وكيف يمكن للتعاون بين المؤسسات الإعلامية المحلية والإقليمية أن يُساهم في الحدّ من انتشار المعلومات الكاذبة وتوعية المواطنين.

The first part of the session will include a brief background about Sudan's political and media ecosystems, an introduction to Beam Reports and its main activities and projects.
The speaker will proceed to present the research and analysis done about misinformation and disinformation trends in Sudan, the most influential actors or networks spreading these types of information, and the techniques used to manipulate online content on the most used social media platforms by Sudanese people. It will also show some examples for attempts of manipulating public opinion, and how they relate to some of the political events taking place in Sudan.
The rest of the session will portray some of the lessons learned and recommendations for combating dis/misinformation in Sudanese social media, and how the collaboration between local and regional media organizations can help mitigate the spread of false information and raise citizen awareness.
