Audience members will walk away understanding the forms of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) occurring online and affecting individuals in the MENA region, including where and how these incidents take place; how governments and tech companies have responded; and what tools and strategies exist to combat these incidents and phenomena online.
In recent years, incidents of sexual & gender-based violence (SGBV) have continued to increase and evolve in the online space, especially in the Middle East & North Africa. Despite a rise in incidents, including cyber-bullying, cyber-harassment, doxxing, revenge porn, cyberstalking, and public shaming, among others, governments & tech companies have been slow to respond.
This session will bring together advocates & experts who have worked to address online SGBV in &across the MENA region. The panelists will explore trends in incidents of online SGBV by looking at public reporting, research, data, & first-hand accounts & testimonies. They will reflect on the response of governments and tech companies, assessing their policies and engagement, and providing a way forward for their interventions. Finally, the panelists will discuss how digital platforms have served &can continue to serve as an alternative space for organizing &mobilizing against SGBV that occurs online.
