Preserving Truth to Power: A Participatory Demo of Save by OpenArchive – Share, Archive, Verify, Encrypt Evidentiary Media - قول الحقيقة أمام السلطة: عرض توضيحي تشاركي حول مشروع "سايف" (Save) من منظمة
11-17, 09:30–10:30 (Asia/Beirut), The Beyond

We are interested in sharing and learning with the hope that Save can be a useful tool for those interested in creating a more secure media preservation ecosystem. We aim to get them to think more about their physical and digital safety when capturing and preserving mobile media as well as the importance of creating robust, secure, verifying digital archives to help preserve truth to power and bring more accountability and justice.

This will be a participatory demo on OpenArchive’s Save app to review its current features and future goals. In collaboration with at-risk groups worldwide, OpenArchive built “Save” (Share, Archive, Verify, Encrypt): a free, open-source mobile application offering human rights defenders, journalists, and eyewitnesses a secure way to amplify, preserve, verify, and protect their documentation and ensure their own personal safety from oppressive actors.

After a short presentation on the tool, the session will leave space for participants to discuss their needs and concerns about mobile archiving efforts, and we will then field their questions about the app and mobile media preservation more generally. Our hope is to better understand whether Save can be useful to participants and learn what gaps still exist in their workflows (e.g. resources/funding, technological capacities, localization/translation, usability, archival experience, etc.).
