In this session the deliverable of the project 'A feminist dictionary in AI' of the Trustworthy Artificial Intelligence working group will be presented. Specifically, the dictionary toolkit with gender-inclusive terms and concepts that can be used as a reference in the AI era will be introduced to the participants. As such, participants with both legal and technocal background will be engaged to the session's case scenario, the design and training of a gender- inclusive algorithm.
More prticularly, participants will be splitted in two break- out rooms (the legal and technical break- out room retrospectively). Every group will have to work further on this project by providing their feedback from their perspective (e.g. what term/concept is missing, what can be explained further etc). This part will last 20 to 30 minutes. After that, all the participants will meet at the plenary session and will have to collaborate and implement the gender equality and non- discrimination principles on a specific case scenario, the design and training of a gender- inclusive algorithm, by using the dictionary. They will have to find out ways to overcome any difficulties during this process. In this way, any legal gaps between legal theory and practice will be bridged.
The goal of the session is all the participants with different backgrounds to become familiar with the gender equality and non- discrimination principles and the design of gender- inclusive algorithms. The outcome of the session will be the dictionary to be enriched with more terms and concepts, while a gender- inclusive algorithm will be designed and can be used as a template.
Why did you choose that space? How does your session align with the space description?:My session aligns with the space narrative ''Gender, Tech & Intersectionality'' since it promotes an intersectional feminist approach taking into consideration race, class, religion, sexuality etc.
How will you deal with varying numbers of participants in your session? What if 30 participants attend? What if there are 3?:In Plan A (more than 30 participants), I can split the participants in more groups. For instance, I can make 2 mini working groups of participants with a legal background and 2 with a technical background. As such, the participants will be splitted in 4 break-out rooms accordingly, so that they can work more efficiently and faster. In this way, in the part of the plenary session, I can make 2 break- out rooms for the same reasons.
In Plan B (if there will be only three participants), I will not make any break- out rooms and working groups. Instead, I will step back and I will join them. We will work together from the first beginning on what can be included in the dictionary and we will make all together a gender- inclusive algorithm. For this reason, I will have some suggestions to make and ideas to share.
I would love to be connected with funders! I am really looking forward to being connected with funders, so that I can find the funding neede to make this dictionary in real! This means that I will take more time to contact and engagemore AI builders and civil society actors, have more case studies to reflect on, and make the proper editing and graphic design with illustrations and visualisations.
