MozFest 2022

Afro Algorithms
Language: English (mozilla)

You're invited to the world premiere of "Afro Algorithms". This 3D animated short film in the Afrofuturist genre explores the topics of AI and bias. In a distant future, an artificial intelligence named Aero is inaugurated as the world’s first AI ruler. But Aero soon learns that important worldviews are missing from her databank, including the experiences of the historically marginalized and oppressed. A slate of well-known Black artists lend their voices to the film, including Robin Quivers, Hoji Fortuna, and Ava Raiin.

This session is being livestreamed and can be viewed from the main page of the MozFest Plaza.

Join the cast + creators of Afro Algorithms following its world premiere by registering for the interactive panel discussion on Thursday, March 10th, 2022: https://schedule.mozillafestival.org/session/QU8PSP-1

What is the goal and/or outcome of your session?:

To celebrate the completion of "Afro Algorithms", Mozilla's Creative Media Award winner of 2021. To inspire the audience to reprogram the future so that we can use technology to better serve everyone, not just a chosen few.

Why did you choose that space? How does your session align with the space description?:

The session will offer insight into the significance of the story that was told in the film, how that relates to the fight of building equitable AI and get into the nitty-gritty of the 3D animation needed to create it.

How will you deal with varying numbers of participants in your session? What if 30 participants attend? What if there are 3?:

There will be 4-6 panelists for the session. Therefore, we can easily hold space for a lot of people to attend. Similarly, it will be okay if there are not many people for the session. However, I imagine there will naturally be somewhat of an audience as Mozilla, myself, and the panelists will all promote it.

What happens after MozFest? We're hoping that many efforts and discussions will continue after MozFest. Share any ideas you already have for how to continue the work from your session.:

I would like for "Afro Algorithms" to stay up on Mozilla.org for a few weeks after Mozfest. I am also looking into partnering with the Algorithmic Justice League and other like-minded organizations to promote the film. We are also looking into public media distribution for the project.

What language would you like to host your session in?:
