MozFest 2022

The Disinformation Ecosystem in 2022: New, Authentic, and Recurring Actors
Language: English (mozilla)

What does the disinformation ecosystem of 2022 look like?

  1. There are many new actors engaged in disinformation campaigns: Domestic political actors,
ideologically motivated activists (from hactivists, terrorist organizaitons, and religious sects)
and individuals motivated by financial gain.

  2. Inauthentic activity is increasingly being orchestrated by authentic accounts. Information
operations are often synonymous with botnets and fake accounts. As social media platforms
become more adept at identifying and actioning these networks the nature of information
operations are subsequently evolving and becoming increasingly complex, utilizing authentic
    actors and/or deep avatar accounts.

  3. Both new actors and authentic accounts are recurring and prolific. Whether it's Russia, China
or Brazil each geography has a set of prolific and recurring threat actors. Who are they? Who
stands behind them? And what is their modus operandi? Often, these actors are not bound by
their geos and overlap, running parallel operations making it even more difficult to pinpoint
    attribution.

In this session, we'll discuss the importance of the burgeoning threat actor ecosystem and the key
prolific disinformation actors and how they operate. Join us ActiveFence’s Head of Geopolitical Risk,
Rachael Levy, to learn what you can do to counter these threats to information integrity.
