In this session we will discuss the intricacies of data governance within data commons and cooperatives. What happens when groups of people come together to collectively govern their data? How do they make decisions about that data? And how do they decide who has a seat at the table? We will explore the obstacles and questions facing such organisations as well as approaches have they found to tackle these questions?
You will hear from Mozilla's Data Futures Lab grantees - Digital Democracy, Driver's Coop and Driver's Seat - who will share their experience building data governance models in the wild.
The goal is to get folks familiar with core principles of data governance and, most importantly, get them started with thinking through how these concepts apply to their own work and experience. In addition, through this session I hope to refine the workshop itself and make it relevant to a larger audience.
Why did you choose that space? How does your session align with the space description?:Data governance is ultimately about questions around power: who gets to decide and how they get to decide. While the description of this space seems to focus more on power imbalances in relation to AI, I would maintain that the power imbalances around decisions about data in turn affect who can benefit from the insights and intelligences built on top (or with the help of) that data.
How will you deal with varying numbers of participants in your session? What if 30 participants attend? What if there are 3?:I will use breakout sessions to deal with varying numbers. The first 30 minutes of the workshop will be plenary, but after that we will split up in groups of 3-4 and we can host as many groups as the space allows for!
What happens after MozFest? We're hoping that many efforts and discussions will continue after MozFest. Share any ideas you already have for how to continue the work from your session.:This session is part of a larger effort by the Mozilla Data Futures Lab to create workshops and other support structures to get folks started with data governance. The learnings from this session will inform that work and the design of future workshops.
