The impact of colonization in Africa has played a major role in the determination of the extent of the vitality and endangerment of many of the indigenous languages in Africa.
Language is one of the core values of people and the identity of any nation. It's been established by the United Nations that “every two weeks, at least one indigenous language vanishes, leading to two language extinctions each month
This panel tends to gather language enthusiasts across the movement to brainstorm on the role of Wikipedia and its sister project in supporting various activities, channeled at preserving indigenous languages.
This session aimed at achieving the following goals:
- To showcase the success stories around various Wikimedia projects that have centered on revitalisation of the indegunoes languages in Africa
- Introduces the role of tools in projects in language documentation and preservation.
- The roles played by individual Wikimedia project in language documentation eg Wikimedia Commons, Wikisource, Wikidata etc in all the mentioned projects
- Impact of inspiration and challenges in the derive of language documentation.
- Identify challenges facing language documentation among language enthusiasts
Our proposal focuses on language documentation, preservation and revitalization a key component in language digitization and culture.
How will you deal with varying numbers of participants in your session? What if 30 participants attend? What if there are 3?:We plan to have more than two facilitators in order to handle the case of many participants and if we have 3 participants, training will be handle to effectively impact the knowledge behind the session.
What happens after MozFest? We're hoping that many efforts and discussions will continue after MozFest. Share any ideas you already have for how to continue the work from your session.:We plan to setup a working committee to further the conversation and execution of action Points from the session
