In this session, we will discuss options to build systems that allow to systematically assess representation and diversity in books and films. We work under the hypothesis that diverse representation in the authorship and content of books and films is paramount to enrich perceptions, and enhance positive participation in social and political processes. To that aim, we created Eureka (eureka.club), the first online book-film club converted to social media, and with a social impact goal: activate minds to transform the world. Eureka is designed to leverage both literature and cinema as vehicles to promote discovery and learning about key social, political and environmental topics. Hence, in this session we use Eureka as motivation and example of the broader need for the systematic assessment and promotion of representation in books and films, and to think collectively on feasible technical approaches to achieve it.
The goal of this session is to brainstorm options to build solid ‘representation indicators’, i.e. 1/ systematizing the collection of authors’ and directors’ basic demographics (primarily defined by gender, ethnic/racial self-identification) through a self-validation mechanism; and 2/ creating two ‘tests’ to assess gender and race representation in fiction movies and books (building from existing ones such as the Bechdel test).
¿Por qué has elegido ese espacio? ¿Cómo se ajusta tu sesión a la descripción del espacio?:Given the structural inequalities in both the publishing and cinema industry, we know that by default, people predominantly consume content produced by white men - and do so without realizing it. To disrupt dominant narratives, it is paramount to enhance the visibility of content produced by women, people of color, indigenous people and other minorities. I make the hypothesis that disruptive tech, in particular latest advancements in Artificial Intelligence (such as GPT3) can be used to make (these) inequalities systematically visible. Our vision is that, by doing so in a systematic manner - individuals are more likely to attempt to correct for inequalities in their own choices. As such, this session fits the overall goal of this space, which is to explore tech-based solutions to enhance equality for women, people of color, indigenous people and other minorities.
¿Cómo vas a hacer frente si varía el número de participantes en tu sesión? ¿Y si asisten 30 participantes? ¿Y si son 3?:The main ways foreseen to adapt the session to the number of participants are: 1/ Adapting the number of breakout rooms and/or number of participants per room, 2/ Conducting the discussion in the full group (if number of participants is particularly low). 3/ As the session is based on existent research, the facilitator can go into more or less detail according to time allocated to discussion (which can be adapted according to the number of participants).
¿Qué pasará después del MozFest? Esperamos que muchos esfuerzos y discusiones continúen después de MozFest. Comparte cualquier idea que tengas sobre cómo continuar el trabajo de tu sesión.:Inputs from the discussion will directly serve the development of Eureka’s systematic representation statistics with a focus on diversity, equity and inclusion.
