The workshop is inspired by ongoing research by the co-facilitators on the role of technology in contributing to food waste reduction and climate change solutions through community-based practices. Technology has been playing a role in the discussion about climate change, and particularly reducing food loss and waste. There have been various technology solutions; blockchain for tracing the supply food chain, Internet of Things (IoT), sensors and big data for providing insight into farming practices, drones for surveying land, and artificial intelligence (AI) for detecting diseases in crops.
Among diverse measures to curb climate change impacts, the food waste problem is one of the easiest measures to deal with. There are various solutions that can be implemented through simple practices and choices at a small scale (as individuals) or within our small neighborhoods by encouraging food sharing.
In this zine-making workshop, participants will work in small groups to co-create a digital zine that shares sustainable practices that can be adopted as individuals, in our homes or communities to reduce food waste. In the share back session, groups will share their ideas, which will be compiled into a zine that will be shared with all participants after the workshop.
The goal of the session is to co-create a digital zine about measures we can adopt as individuals or local communities for sustainable food systems. Some of the questions we shall explore include: What can we do to contribute to efforts to reduce food waste? How can technology support these efforts? What challenges are standing in the way of addressing climate change, as it relates to reducing food waste?
¿Por qué has elegido ese espacio? ¿Cómo se ajusta tu sesión a la descripción del espacio?:The 2 facilitators are researchers, currently exploring ways in which technologies can support climate change. The first facilitator is working on research at the intersection of food sharing communities (like community fridges in local communities in Scotland), design and technology (specifically Internet of Things (IoT). The second facilitator’s work focuses on increasing social-ecological resilience by implementing nature-based solutions (NbS) using German and Korean cities as an example. Her main goal is to develop NbS in mitigating climate change impacts, increasing adaptive capacity as well as multi-functionality of forests.
¿Cómo vas a hacer frente si varía el número de participantes en tu sesión? ¿Y si asisten 30 participantes? ¿Y si son 3?:The workshop is designed to work despite the number of participants in the session. In the event that 30 participants attend, we shall work in smaller breakout rooms and then share back the discussions from each group. If only 3 participants attend, then we shall work together in the main session room by having a discussion as a group.
¿Qué pasará después del MozFest? Esperamos que muchos esfuerzos y discusiones continúen después de MozFest. Comparte cualquier idea que tengas sobre cómo continuar el trabajo de tu sesión.:We plan to leave the zine collection tool open for a couple of days to allow contributions after the session. Zine creation will start during the workshop, with contributions after, and consolidation done by the facilitators, then shared with all workshop participants. Facilitators will also use their networks to share the zine more widely. The discussions during the session will contribute to ongoing research work by facilitators.
