Like many other countries in the world, Mexico was hit by severe impacts of the pandemic, which also aggravated the social, economic, and digital divides amongst its population. As gender-based violence rates arose, as LGBTQ+ people took the streets to protest, as feminist movements looked for spaces to embrace their communities, as grassroots human rights defenders oppose militarization, and as people kept looking for justice in different parts of the country, technologies became a crucial part of how we can imagine other possibilities for decentralization, community building, resilience, and transformative justice movements.
comun.al, a digital resiliency lab created in 2021, has been looking for and accompanying some of these people willing to harness community and create more nurturing, collaborative, and fair futures. Join us as we share our story. Let’s dream together of endless possibilities!
With this session we aim to raise awareness on comun.al, and hopefully generate some interest amongst like-minded people who would like to provide feedback or support to this initiative, as well as contribute to the upcoming activities and tools we are looking forward to share.
Why did you choose that space? How does your session align with the space description?:I chose the "Rethinking Power and Ethics" space because I'd like to keep awareness on how, in diverse parts of the world, the issues regarding power, representation, and human rights in the intersection with technologies go far beyond AI. Latin America, with Mexico being an unfortunate great example of this, has some of the highest rates in the digital divide and lack of access to some of the basic needs that have to be met to harness diverse participation and allow people to take back the power that has been neglected to them; through the misuse of different kinds of technologies, and state-sponsored agendas that use technologies to avoid accountability of the abusive use of specific technologies.
How will you deal with varying numbers of participants in your session? What if 30 participants attend? What if there are 3?:This session is designed to be a broadcast session. The overall guidance will be running smoothly with high or low participation. In any case, there will be a contemplated time for feedback and other channels that will be provided for people who want to continue the conversation and reach out to do so.
What happens after MozFest? We're hoping that many efforts and discussions will continue after MozFest. Share any ideas you already have for how to continue the work from your session.:As comun.al is an ongoing effort, we hope this session will spark interest and collaboration possibilities with people from the Mozilla Community and beyond! We are looking for ideas, proposals, and chances to learn from people willing to share their knowledge/experience with individuals and communities in Mexico seeking to incorporate technologies as tools for access to justice in their advocacy and community organizing towards a transformation of our current environment.
