Like many other countries in the world, Mexico was hit by severe impacts of the pandemic, which also aggravated the social, economic, and digital divides amongst its population. As gender-based violence rates arose, as LGBTQ+ people took the streets to protest, as feminist movements looked for spaces to embrace their communities, as grassroots human rights defenders oppose militarization, and as people kept looking for justice in different parts of the country, technologies became a crucial part of how we can imagine other possibilities for decentralization, community building, resilience, and transformative justice movements.
comun.al, a digital resiliency lab created in 2021, has been looking for and accompanying some of these people willing to harness community and create more nurturing, collaborative, and fair futures. Join us as we share our story. Let’s dream together of endless possibilities!
With this session we aim to raise awareness on comun.al, and hopefully generate some interest amongst like-minded people who would like to provide feedback or support to this initiative, as well as contribute to the upcoming activities and tools we are looking forward to share.
¿Por qué has elegido ese espacio? ¿Cómo se ajusta tu sesión a la descripción del espacio?:I chose the "Rethinking Power and Ethics" space because I'd like to keep awareness on how, in diverse parts of the world, the issues regarding power, representation, and human rights in the intersection with technologies go far beyond AI. Latin America, with Mexico being an unfortunate great example of this, has some of the highest rates in the digital divide and lack of access to some of the basic needs that have to be met to harness diverse participation and allow people to take back the power that has been neglected to them; through the misuse of different kinds of technologies, and state-sponsored agendas that use technologies to avoid accountability of the abusive use of specific technologies.
¿Cómo vas a hacer frente si varía el número de participantes en tu sesión? ¿Y si asisten 30 participantes? ¿Y si son 3?:This session is designed to be a broadcast session. The overall guidance will be running smoothly with high or low participation. In any case, there will be a contemplated time for feedback and other channels that will be provided for people who want to continue the conversation and reach out to do so.
¿Qué pasará después del MozFest? Esperamos que muchos esfuerzos y discusiones continúen después de MozFest. Comparte cualquier idea que tengas sobre cómo continuar el trabajo de tu sesión.:As comun.al is an ongoing effort, we hope this session will spark interest and collaboration possibilities with people from the Mozilla Community and beyond! We are looking for ideas, proposals, and chances to learn from people willing to share their knowledge/experience with individuals and communities in Mexico seeking to incorporate technologies as tools for access to justice in their advocacy and community organizing towards a transformation of our current environment.
¿En qué idioma te gustaría realizar tu sesión?: InglésAlex is a technologist and human rights defender. In 2021, they founded the digital resilience lab comun.al. They've been collaborating in the Latin American collective Ciberseguras since 2017. Since 2013 they have provided digital security training and accompaniment to different human rights defenders, LGBTQ+ communities, feminist activists, and journalist groups in Brasil, Chile, and México.
As a Mozilla Tech and Society Fellow, Alex has been researching the impacts of sociopolitical violence and the use of digital technologies to develop approaches to technological sovereignty for human rights defenders working in Mexico; combining psychosocial accompaniment, holistic security, and a transformative justice approach to promote human rights and dignity in the digital realm.
