Facial recognition technology has been touted as the solution to crime in India with massive amounts of expenditure being incurred to procure this technology by State Police departments as well as the National Crime Records Bureau in India. However, is this technology capable of solving the historical issue of bias in policing? Experts have repeatedly cautioned against buying into the myth that Artificial Intelligence is free of bias. Research has shown that contrary to the opinion that Facial Recognition Technology will help in policing, due to its inaccuracies and inherent biases, it will lead to further discrimination against marginalised communities. This is especially so for those communities that have been historically over-policed and discriminated against.
The goal of our session is to create awareness around the issue of AI technologies magnifying existing biases in policing especially in countries where they have not been developed or have been exported to as a result of which there is a marked decrease in their accuracy.
¿Por qué has elegido ese espacio? ¿Cómo se ajusta tu sesión a la descripción del espacio?:The space “Decolonised AI Futures” wants to give a voice to people who have been racialized as ‘ethnic minorities’ and have largely been kept apart from the development and implementation of AI, treating Western perspectives as objective universal truths. Through our session, we want to highlight how the use of AI for policing is affecting those who have been targeted by the Police historically.
¿Cómo vas a hacer frente si varía el número de participantes en tu sesión? ¿Y si asisten 30 participantes? ¿Y si son 3?:To accommodate variation in participant size, we will ensure that our session is a mix of conversation between the panelists themselves as well as audience participation. This will allow us to ensure that all those who turn up are able to take away a meaningful experience from the session.
